From the Desk of the Executive Director
COVID-19 has turned our world upside down. It’s impossible to close out a summation of 2020 without starting with that. Our 2020 heroes are our front-line workers from all industries from the battlegrounds inside Intensive Care Units to the steady hands of reliable truck drivers transporting our goods across our nation. Our thoughts are with all in our communities dealing with broken hearts from their losses or the suffering and lingering damages from their own battles with the global virus. Our governments are trying. Our academia are racing forward on research they never ever planned to do. And on and on and on as we all deal with this massively-complex and interconnected situation in whatever role we can play.

Indeed, the arrival of the vaccines offer hope for us all.
On that positive front, in 2020, MFGA continued our strategic path as a collaborative, solutions-based, producer led group with a growing network and activated wingspan around producer information and farmland projects specifically targeting forages, grasslands, soil health, water and regenerative agriculture practices. But again, in the context of looking forward, there is also balance with great news in the form of challenges we can expect. On that front, MFGA believes the growing threat of drought across our province and the Prairie province region needs priority attention and planning. You will see a dedicated approach toward profiling farmer-led practices and drought-buffering tools and activities that can better help our producers and communities in these expected and forecast times ahead.

As a wrap to 2020 and a cant-get-here-fast-enough hello to 2021, MFGA would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Muchos Grasses,
Duncan Morrison, MFGA Executive Director
Western Manitoba Producers Boost Soil Health via Cover Crop Project
Shaun Cory knows that when it comes to farming, Mother Nature bats last. That’s why the Wawanesa-area farmer was quick to sign up for a Manitoba Conservation Trust-funded project led by Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association (MFGA) on cover crops across three Watershed Districts in western Manitoba. Support for the cover crop and soil-health project has been provided by The Conservation Trust, a Manitoba Climate and Green Plan Initiative delivered by the Manitoba Habitat Heritage Corporation. December Hay Situation & Price Update
Hay supplies throughout Manitoba are reported as adequate to a slight surplus situation as we approach the end of 2020. This is in part due to producers making early arrangements to grow and/or acquire additional feed, extended grazing this fall, mild conditions requiring less feed and herd reductions in the fall and winter of 2019/20. The full report found here.
Corn grazing management
A recent newsletter from the Saskatchewan Agriculture provided a summarization of a study from the Western Beef Development Center at the University of Saskatchewan that may be of special interest to those that still have corn to feed. Read on...

Beef called wrong target in health movement
As one of MFGA’s keynote speakers at our 2020 Regenerative Agriculture Conference, author and nutritionist Diana Rodgers has taken on many modern myths surrounding red meat and cattle production. Rodgers debunks the argument that vegetarianism and veganism are the only healthy choices for the future in her book and documentary, both entitled Sacred Cow. Read the full Western Producer article.

Farmers and Other Stakeholders Invited to Comment on Manitoba Plan to Transition to Permanent Ag Plastic Waste Recycling
A pilot project in Manitoba that collects and recycles plastic agricultural waste such as grain bags and baler twine is set to transition to a permanent, province-wide, industry-funded ag recycling program in 2021. Cleanfarms has developed a first draft of a stewardship transition plan and is inviting farmers, companies that supply ag plastics to farmers and other stakeholders to comment on it. Manitoba Farm Safety Program Tip
Moving into winter, many tractors must be warmed up before they can be used. Even properly functioning block heaters can cause a fire if cords or electrical outlets are inappropriate. Unsafe conditions could include damaged wiring on the block heater, damaged or incorrect extension cord or damaged electrical plug-in outlet. Take time to closely examine the condition of the block heater plug and lead connection. Check for cracked or exposed wiring. Ensure that the extension cord is heavy duty and suitable for use in cold weather conditions. Check that the electrical outlet has no damage to the cover plate or blackened areas from heat damage.
