High in Plain Sight Drug Trends Training

Community Advocates Public Policy Institute is pleased to offer two online sessions of Officer Jermaine Galloway’s High in Plain Sight Drug Trends Training on November 12. For more than 18 years, Officer Galloway (the "Tall Cop") has focused on drug/alcohol abuse prevention and enforcement. He has taught and continues to give presentations to a diverse group of professionals from across the country, including law enforcement, parents and educators, mental health providers, treatment professionals, and more.

High in Plain sight will cover current youth drug trends, from marijuana concentrates/dabs to vapes, drug-related clothing, and over the counter drugs. This fast-moving class will highlight current drugs our youth might be using, along with other drug-related popular culture items. This webinar will be presented live twice on November 12, at 9 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. The webinar will not be recorded, so please RSVP only if you can attend the live presentation. Three-Digit National Suicide & Mental Health Crisis Hotline Signed into Law

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin’s National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, just signed into law, establishes 9-8-8 for anyone in crisis seeking support, especially those contemplating suicide. The law also requires SAMHSA to report to Congress on its plans to facilitate specific training programs for serving LGBTQ youth, Native Americans, and rural residents through the hotline. The new hotline will also allow veterans to press "1" after dialing to immediately access the Veterans Crisis Line for veteran-specific mental health support. Until 9-8-8 is up and running, anyone seeking help should call 1-800-273-8255.
Neu-Life Community Development Seeks TOP Club Youth
Neu-Life is taking registration for the all-virtual TOP Club program. TOP Club helps teens build educational success, life and leadership skills, healthy behaviors, and relationships. As a result, teens are better able to navigate challenges during their teenage years. Middle School youth ages 11-14 are invited to join. Earn up to $100 for attending! Get details and register here.
Junior League of Milwaukee Offers Grant Funding
The Junior League of Milwaukee seeks proposals from Milwaukee-area nonprofits to partner on projects that support our mission. JLM focuses its community efforts in the areas of education, health, and nutrition of women and children in the greater Milwaukee area. Community-based nonprofits are encouraged to apply for up to $10,000 in grant awards for projects which align with the JLM’s mission. The due date is November 15, 2020. The request for proposals can be found at this link.
Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship Program Openings
The Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship Program is a two-year service and training program designed for early career individuals in public health and allied sciences. Fellows are placed in practice-based settings in community, non-profit, governmental, and/or health service organizations around Wisconsin. Through a curriculum focused on health equity and collaborative leadership, Fellows leave the program with a health equity lens applied to their practice as well as tangible skills in public health programming and management. Applications will be accepted from October 26, 2020, to January 4, 2021.

MCSAP Healthy Families Virtual Resource Fair

MCSAP’s next Virtual Resource Fair will feature parent support specialists, fathers and doulas addressing the importance of making health and wellness a family tradition. Join us to learn more about the birthing process, the role of fathers in promoting healthy lifestyles, and tips for talking about health with children. Participants will receive free resources they can share with others and benefit from personally. The Challenge of Child Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Child care providers and working parents have faced particular challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this webinar organized by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Institute for Research on Poverty, participants will hear about the experiences of family providers and teachers from Juliet Bromer of the Erikson Institute and Daphna Bassok of EdPolicyWorks. Alejandra Ros Pilarz of UW-Madison's Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work will discuss their presentations and the challenges faced by working parents. Wisconsin Cancer Summit

How can we reduce the burden of cancer for everyone? The virtual 2020 Wisconsin Cancer Summit will bring together health system leaders, public health advocates, policy makers, researchers, and other partners from across our state who are working to fight cancer by using the Wisconsin Cancer Plan as their blueprint for action. Freshstart Smoking Cessation Program
Wednesdays, October 28-November 18
Aurora Health’s four-week smoking cessation program, Freshstart, is offered at no cost and teaches participants how quit smoking and not be dependent on nicotine, from the comfort of their own home. Sessions will be held on Wednesdays, 3 to 4 p.m., from October 28 through November 18 on Zoom and are sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Register by emailing Laurie.dlouhy@aah.org.
Social Media Wellness During COVID-19

Working with kids in today’s digital world has never been so complex, and keeping up with the latest social media trends can seem like a never-ending challenge. In this pandemic school year, many teens and young adults have found online tools to be the critical lifeline for promoting and maintaining community. At the same time, our current learning environments also play host to many distractions, including social media. Noted author and educator Ana Homayoun helps parents and educators understand the new world of social media socialization, and provides practical tips on how we can all work to make better choices around social media use and overall wellness. Treating Tobacco Dependence in Youth and Adolescents

Stewards of Children

Stewards of Children is a call to action for all adults to help prevent the sexual abuse of children. This Registry-approved training includes a workbook, a video presentation, and group discussion, as well as a refresher on the responsibilities of Mandated Reporters. Disparities in Youth Justice Fact Sheet
The Wisconsin Office of Children’s Mental Health has produced a new fact sheet on disparities in youth justice. One hundred percent of females and 72% of males in Wisconsin youth corrections facilities had a mental health issue, including those who were convicted in adult court. CDC Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Smoking Update
The CDC Coronavirus (COVID-19) webpages have been updated to reflect recent data showing that adults who smoke or have a history of smoking are at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19. Learn more at this link.
Wisconsin 2019 Hepatitis C Virus Surveillance Report 
The Wisconsin Hepatitis C Program has recently published the 2019 Wisconsin Hepatitis C Virus Surveillance Review. In 2019, the hepatitis C virus (HCV) epidemic in Wisconsin continued, with 2,467 newly reported cases. Newly reported hepatitis C cases were commonly reported among two groups: young adults who were likely recently infected and older adults (primarily baby boomers) who were likely infected many years ago.
