Compass to Host NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt for Two Weeks in December
Lake Worth Beach, FL - On Monday, December 2nd, Compass Community Center (Compass) will host their annual World AIDS Day ceremony. The event kicks off two weeks of programming focused around the agency's annual display of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. The ceremony will take place at 6:00 PM at Compass, located at 201 N Dixie Highway in Lake Worth Beach.

World AIDS Day was first recognized in 1988 at the height of the AIDS epidemic, and was the  first world health day to be designated in history. World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public and the government that HIV has not gone away; there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight stigma, and improve education.

Lorenzo Lowe, director of Compass' HIV Prevention Program, describes this year's quilt display, "The theme for this year's display is Community. More than half the quilt panels selected this year were requested by community members, in remembrance of friends and family who have died. It is our role to talk about the effect of the AIDS epidemic on our community, prevent the epidemic from continuing, and remember those we have lost."

Continuing with the theme of community, a number of the quilt panels will also be displayed at other locations in the area including the Flamingo Gallery in Lake Worth Beach, Lynn University in Boca Raton, The Metropolitan Community Church in Palm Beach Gardens, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in West Palm Beach, The Department of Health on Clematis St., Cornell Art Museum in Delray Beach, The Lantana branch of the PBC Library System, and Seacoast Bank on Palm Beach Lakes Blvd.

New programming for World AIDS Day this year includes two showings of the film "5B." This film is the inspirational story of everyday heroes, nurses and caregivers who took extraordinary action to comfort, protect and care for the patients of the first AIDS ward unit in the United States. The film will be shown at The DePuy Synthes Institute in Palm Beach Gardens on Wednesday December 4th at 6 PM, and at the Lantana branch of the PBC Library System on Thursday December 12th at 6 PM. The screenings of this film are made possible with the support of Open & Out, a Johnson & Johnson employee group.
