Save your life or the life of someone you love!
With other illnesses getting more attention nowadays, it's easy to forget that breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women and the second most common cancer overall. Don't forget, men are also at risk.

According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 8 women (13%) will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. 1 in 39 women (3%) will die from breast cancer. We all know that cancer affects the entire family as well as friends – therefore the total number of people influenced by breast cancer is much larger.

Make this October the month you learn more about breast cancer, including signs, symptoms, and ways you can support further research. Check out the American Cancer Society's site here.

Simple daily activities to teach kids (and YOU) about the power of emotions
Frowns, tears, meltdowns. Smiles, giggles, belly laughs. These are all natural reactions to the many emotions we feel...every single day.

Feelings come and go on a regular basis, just like clouds in the sky. And learning how to express how you feel, rather than just react, is super difficult. Did you know that understanding and managing emotions is actually a developmental skill?

This is why we see outward behaviors that might be difficult to understand. But if we think about these behaviors as communication, without getting triggered by them, we can lean in with curiosity and empathy to help.

Pet of the Month

Bruno Garcia

Time to meet the favorite son of our own Kristen Garcia in Food Services. We have been informed that Bruno is indeed, the perfect dog. If those ears are any indication, Kristen may be correct!

From Kristen, "Bruno was born September 21st, 2016 in Los Angeles. He is the best red Boston Terrier ever. My family and I went to LA a few days before Thanksgiving to pick him up, and on the road we were discussing concerts we want to go to. Well Bruno Mars came up and all the sudden my oldest son says, "why don't we just call the dog Bruno". Best decision ever! He is full of energy and knows some cool tricks! Every household needs a Bruno!"

Do you have the perfect pet? Time to give them the recognition they deserve, and such a great resumé builder! Send 'em in to communications@slusd.us!

Butternut Squash Salad

This salad is filled with pomegranates, goat cheese, greens, and a spiced cumin-date dressing. It's hearty enough to be a meal on its own!

Ingredients
  • 1 small butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cubed
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon ground coriander
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 6 cups loose-packed organic spring mix greens
  • 2 ounces goat cheese, torn into smaller pieces
  • 2 medjool dates, pitted and diced
  • ¼ cup pomegranate seeds
  • ¼ cup pistachios, crushed and toasted
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Cider Date Dressing (makes extra)
  • 5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 medjool date, pitted
  • ½ garlic clove
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cumin
  • heaping ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 3 to 5 tablespoons water, as needed to blend

Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the butternut squash cubes on the sheet and drizzle with olive oil and pinches of sea salt and pepper. Toss to coat and spread evenly on the baking sheet. Roast for 30 to 35 minutes, or until tender and browned around the edges.
  2. Stir together the cumin, coriander, cinnamon and cayenne. Set aside.
  3. Make the Cider Date Dressing: In a blender, combine the olive oil, vinegar, lemon juice, date, garlic, cumin, salt, pepper, and 3 tablespoons of water. Add 1 to 2 more tablespoons of water as needed to blend.
  4. Remove the butternut squash from the oven, let cool slightly, and, while warm, toss with the spice mixture.
  5. Assemble the salad with the spring mix greens and half of the roasted squash. Drizzle with ⅓ of the dressing, toss lightly, then add the remaining squash, goat cheese, dates, pomegranates, and pistachios. Drizzle with more dressing as desired. Serve immediately.
