IN THIS ISSUE
The church office will be closed on Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

Rector's Ramblings

A man in Phoenix calls his son in New York the day before Thanksgiving and says, "I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough. "Dad, what are you talking about?" the son screams. "We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the father says. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her." Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this!" She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at her father, "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up. The man slowly hangs up his phone with a smile, and turns to his wife. "Okay," he says, "they're coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own way!"

The Men's Discussion Group gathers on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am in the Youth Room in the Parish House. They have begun a new study of Thomas
Sowell's Discrimination and Disparities, which presents a wide array of empirical evidence to challenge the idea that different economic outcomes can be explained by any one factor, be it discrimination, exploitation, or genetics. If you'd like to join the group , please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .
Wednesday Advent Study
The Advent Study with Fr. Tom and Rabbi Bregman got off to a
great start on Wednesday, November 27.

Fr. Tom and Rabbi Rachael Bregman are leading Wednesday lunch-time sessions in Advent that take a deep dive into the history of the birth of Christ. The study is utilizing Amy-Jill Levine's, Light of the World: A Beginner's Guide to Advent and will explore the biblical texts surrounding the story of the birth of Jesus, tracing the Christmas narrative through the stories of Zechariah and Elizabeth, Mary, the journey to Bethlehem, and the visit from the Magi. The group meets on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm on 12/4, 12/11 and 12/18. A simple lunch will be served each week. Books are available through the Christ Church bookstore for $11.50. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected]
Thursday Contemplative Group

Beginning December 5, at 11:00 am, Randy Siegel will lead a weekly contemplative group in the Vestry Room of the Christ Church Parish House. Contemplative practices help us know God. Through prayer, worship, scripture, meditation, and silence, we experience God's presence and are healed, renewed and transformed by God's love. The group will meet for five Thursdays from 11:00 am to Noon on December 5, 12, 19 and January 2 and 9. (We will skip the week of Christmas.) Come when you can! Thanksgiving Basket Packing 2019

Jeannie Wade would like to say many BIG thank-yous to everyone involved in making Thanksgiving baskets for our 23 local families this year! First, THANK YOU to all who donated non-perishable foods and made generous monetary contributions, so that turkeys and additional items could be purchased for the baskets. Next, THANK YOU to Mtr. Katie and the Christ Church Youth for sorting and organizing all the boxes and cans of food for the Thanksgiving basket assembly line. Finally, THANK YOU to all the many folks who worked hard on basket assembly day, picking up foods and turkeys from Harris Teeter, packing the actual food baskets and then delivering them to homes on here on the island. We could not have done all this without YOU! THANK YOU!

And now, because Advent starts this Sunday, it's time to turn our attention to Christmas Baskets. Collection of non-perishable food will begin on December 7 and end on December 19, when we'll be packing again. Stay tuned for more details!  Contact: Jeannie Wade at [email protected]
Backpack Buddies to Pack on December 11

The Christ Church Backpack Buddy program is feeding 500+ students this school year and we need all the help we can get on packing days. Please join us on the line, on Wednesday, December 11 , at 10:00 am, in the Parish Hall and help us get all the bags packed. This will be our final packing of the first school semester and we really need everyone to give us a hand!

You can honor a loved one this Christmas by sponsoring weekend food for a child for an entire school year for $100, or for one semester for $50. For more information, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected]
Christmas at Sea
Every year during the season of Christmas, the International Seafarers' Center spreads the love of Christ through their Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7th and the Center hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present.

If you'd like to be part of this ministry, it's as easy as filling a clear plastic shoebox or ditty bag with 12 - 15 item from the list found  here and bringing it to either the church office in the Parish Hall, or to the International Seafarers Center, at 307 Newcastle Street in Brunswick.
Angel Tree for Safe Harbor Street Beat Teens
The Angel Tree is back this year and will be set up in the Parish Hall. Stop by and choose an angel! This year we are helping the teens in the Safe Harbor Street Beat program experience the spirit of Christmas by gifting them with one wish from their Christmas list.

Street Beat is an outreach program that reaches out to homeless teens. The Street Beat staff build trusting relationships, provide nutrition, academic support, hygiene kits, sexual exploitation literature, and support for youth who want to come off the streets. Young people receive help completing their education, planning for careers, and acquiring housing.

Please bring unwrapped gifts, or gifts in unsealed gift bags, with the angels affixed to the outside, to the Parish Hall, by Friday, December 13. For more information, please contact Donna Purdy at [email protected].
Christ Church Comforters Watch Caps
In addition to their many other projects, the Christ Church Comforters have been creating beautiful knit caps in various sizes. If you are planning to make a box for the International Seafarers Center - Christmas at Sea program, knit caps in adults sizes, made by the Comforters, will be available for you to add to your box. If you'd like a cap, please contact Mtr. Ashton at [email protected] or Gay Barron at [email protected].
Help Children at Burroughs Molette Whenever You Buy Groceries at Harris Teeter
You can help Burroughs Molette Elementary School every time you shop at Harris Teeter. Simply tell your cashier (during check-out) that you want Burroughs Molette's account number (6700) linked to your Harris Teeter VIC card. Once the account number is linked, every time you shop during the program, 2% of your Harris Teeter brand purchases will be contributed by Harris Teeter to the school. It's that easy!
The ECW Tour of Homes Needs You Now!
Last spring, 29 agencies primarily serving women and children in need, benefited from ECW's Annual Tour of Homes, and from the sale of our Christ Church Cookbook. This fall, we again are asking for generous donations that will help in so many lives. We look to our church family, and beyond, to make it happen. If you'd like to be a patron or volunteer on Tour Day, March 21, please contact Susie Henning at  [email protected]), or Tami Black at  [email protected], or visit christchurchtourofhomes.org.

Making a Charitable Distribution
In this season of giving, and as we wrap up 2019, we've got some information to share about making charitable donations from the required distribution of your IRA, should it apply to you.

Did you know that you can make a donation of all or a portion of the Required Minimum Distribution from your retirement account to Christ Church, and your donation will be tax-exempt? Here's how it works.I f a person is at least age 70½, they must take at least a minimum distribution from their IRA or incur a penalty equal to one-half of the otherwise required minimum distribution amount. They may take more than the minimum at their discretion. These individuals may instruct their IRA account manager to distribute any amount of their choosing to one or more tax-exempt charities such as Christ Church.

When that is done, it is considered to be a tax-exempt contribution. Christ Church would acknowledge to the giver the receipt of that contribution from their IRA. Also, this contribution is tax-exempt even if the individual does not itemize deductions for income tax purposes because the IRA account manager would not identify this to the IRS as reportable income in accordance with the tax code. For more information about Qualified Charitable Distributions, check out the Internal Revenue Service Publication 590-B, "Distributions from Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs)" or speak with your tax advisor.
Emergency Contact Information Needed
We are in the process of adding emergency contact information for parishioners into the Christ Church Realm database. When you log into your Realm profile, you may enter the information yourself. If you need help with Realm, please contact Glenn at [email protected]. If you prefer not to use computers, call Mother Ashton at the church office, at 912-638-8683, and she will happily take your information and enter it into the database.
