COVID-19 City/County Updates & Resources

How to Celebrate Halloween Safely!

Bay Area health officials remind residents that many commonly celebrated Halloween and Día
de Los Muertos activities carry high risk for spreading COVID-19. Focusing on decorations,
limiting activities to the people you live with, and virtual costume parties or contests will help
keep our communities safe this season, especially our children. Together, we all need to do as
much as we can to protect ourselves and those around us.

Read the full statement here for guidelines.

Know Your COVID-19 Risk

Keeping our bodies healthy is important during stressful times and exercising helps our physical, mental, and emotional health. It's also important to stay COVID-safe while exercising.
Whether you are running, lifting weights, or practicing any other type of exercise, stay healthy and safe by following these tips:

* Outside is safer than inside
* Exercise with people from your household or alone
* Keep a face covering with you to wear before and after exercising

Indoor gyms and fitness centers are currently allowed to operate while following Social Distancing Protocols (SDP) to ensure safety. Familiarize yourself with the requirements here: https://direc.to/dsdf

Flu Shot

It's not too early to get a flu shot because it takes about two weeks for the flu vaccine to become effective after you get the shot. The flu shot is a safe, effective way to reduce your chance of ending up in the hospital with severe flu. Each winter, people sick with flu crowd hospitals and urgent care clinics.

Find a location near you:

Social Distance Protocol Search

Curious about which businesses are COVID-19 prepared? You can now search the business database to see which businesses are following Social Distancing Protocols. Search by name, type or location here.

Businesses must require the following for employees and customers:
☑️ Face coverings (exceptions for medical reasons)
☑️ Social distancing
☑️ Hand-washing or provide hand sanitizer stations

Virtual Local Assistance Center

With the County of Santa Clara extending the Shelter-in-Place Order though May 31, you may be wondering how to access helpful government services. The City's Virtual Local Assistance Center is here to help. The website includes information about where food is being distributed and where to get help with housing, rent, and eviction issues. It also covers unemployment services, domestic violence services, and how to keep healthy during the pandemic. Residents can also call 311 for the same information.

Free COVID-19 Testing in Santa Clara County

Widespread testing provides a more accurate picture of how many cases exist in our community and helps us understand how and where the virus is spreading. Testing helps identify people without symptoms who could be spreading COVID-19 so that they can stay away from work and public places until their infectious period is over.

Silicon Valley Strong Fund

The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is already hurting Silicon Valley residents, businesses, and community-based organizations. Particularly hard hit are those families and individuals who can least afford a medical or financial crisis, small businesses whose revenues have fallen off, and nonprofits that are seeing an increased need for services or have had to cancel arts, cultural, or fundraising events. The Silicon Valley Strong Fund-in partnership with lead organizations and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation-will work to address these economic impacts.

Now is the time for residents, businesses, and government to partner together to help. Donate, volunteer and read more here

Dine Downtown San Jose

Dine Downtown 2020 celebrates all Downtown San Jose restaurants currently open during the COVID-19 pandemic. Downtown restaurants are eager to see their customers return for the extended promotion, October 1st to November 15th, 46 days covering seven weekends to celebrate and support all the downtown San Jose eateries that have remained open for business during the strict pandemic protocols.

Cafes are joining in the program this year with creative food and coffee pairings. Dine Downtown in past years focused on white tablecloth dining with chef specials, prix fixe menus and wine/cocktail tastings.

SJDA is still gathering offers from regular Dine Downtown participants, including 71 Saint Peter, Farmers Union, District, Enoteca la Storia, Habana Cuba and Hawaiian Poke Bowl. One newcomer this year is the Petiscos by Adega Portuguese restaurant at 399 S. First St., which is scheduled to open during Dine Downtown's run.

Now Open: San José Annual Resident Survey

From September 30 through October 16, San José residents can help shape the future of the city by completing an online survey found here

The survey includes questions about City services provided to residents, as well as the quality of life in San José in general. Residents can share their feedback about many topics, including parks, roads, libraries, and public safety. Participation is encouraged for all residents to have their voices heard. Last year, over 4,000 residents took part in the annual survey.

The survey is completely anonymous, and available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Chinese. No personal information will be collected or shared.

Results will be included in the City Auditor's Annual Report on City Services, which will be released in December and presented to the City Council in January. This is the tenth year the National Research Center has conducted this survey. Previous survey results, along with past Services Reports, can be found at: http://www.sanjoseca.gov/servicesreport.

We want to hear from you! Please help us shape the future of San José!

City Services Update

San José 311 is a great way to report a concern without having to research and reach out to the appropriate department. The online version and mobile app have answers to many frequently asked questions, and our staff in the call center are highly knowledgeable and helpful.

Since the COVID-19 crisis response began in March 2020, many city staff have been reassigned to other duties, such as food distribution, housing support, and traffic management around testing and food distribution sites. The City has also significantly adjusted the ways staff work to accommodate social distancing and other safety requirements, as well as child care needs.

As a result of these staffing changes, some non-essential City services that would typically be requested through San José 311 have been either suspended or significantly slowed:

Vehicle Abatement: Used to report vehicles parked on the street for more than 72 hours, vehicles that are non-operational, or vehicles that pose a safety concern. This service has been suspended and is not currently acting on requests from the public. Instead, Parking and Traffic Control Officers are proactively patrolling every street in the city every 7-10 days and citing and towing vehicles that are non-operational or pose a health, safety, or extreme blight hazard. This approach allows us to equitably provide service to the whole city with limited budgetary and staffing resources.

Graffiti Removal: Graffiti is still abated within 72 hours of being reported. However, due to location, weather, or surface, abatement times may vary. Gang and offensive graffiti is removed within 1 business day. In order to have gang/offensive graffiti elevated, please call the graffiti program directly at (408) 975-7233.

Illegal Dumping: Due to the City's response to COVID-19, and the substantial increase in illegal dumping following shelter in place, the RAPID (Removing and Preventing Illegal Dumping) team's response to reports of illegal dumping may be delayed up to 7 to 10 business days. Large problem areas may take longer to resolve. Dumping not in the City's jurisdiction (on freeway off-ramps, railroad tracks, creeks, etc.) is not under the City's control and requires coordination with other agencies, which can take significant time.

Pothole Repair: Pothole service requests are still being responded to in a timely manner, with response times depending on type, location, and depth of the pothole. Most requests are resolved within 48 hours. This is an essential service and has not been delayed due to COVID-19.

Streetlight Outage: This program is currently operational with slight delays. Common streetlight outages are repaired within 16 business days. More complex situations like streetlight poles that have been knocked down will vary. If the situation is urgent, such as exposed wires or a damaged pole, please call (408) 277-8956.

SJC Invests in UV Light Technology for All Handrails Throughout Terminals

Aitken and SJC have introduced Schindlers Ultra UV Pro handrail device, which uses an invisible dual UVC light to destroy bacteria and viruses, preventing their spread. The devices are housed discreetly within the escalator handrail framework, which means that the UVC light emitted will not affect passengers and only disinfects the surface with which it comes in contact.

SJC's new virus-zapping UVC lights join a growing list of safety measures deployed at the Airport in
response to the COVID-19 pandemic:

- Face coverings required in all Airport facilities
- Regular, deep cleanings using electrostatic sprayers to disinfect hard-to-reach areas
- Hand sanitizing stations in high-touch points areas throughout the Terminals
- Plexiglass shields installed at ticket counters, gate podiums, and baggage claim offices
- Social distancing signage to remind passengers to maintain six feet apart
- Partitions in restrooms between faucets and urinals to provide additional protection

For more information about SJC's health and safety measures, visit flysanjose.com/coronavirus.
