South Carolina graduates of our farms and training centers shined in stakes races from July 20 to August 20 reaching the winner's circle 15 times.
Just Howard was best in the Oceanport Stakes-G3 at Monmouth Park on July 20. In the stretch,
Just Howard was between rivals and battled to the wire reaching it a head in front.
Just Howard came up in Franklin "Goree" Smith's program at the Elloree Training Center.
Kauai ran mid-pack in the Iowa Stallion Stakes on July 20. He came five wide into the stretch, survived some bumping and prevailed as the favorite by a ½ length.
Kauai received his early lessons in Cary Frommer's program in Aiken.
On the same day, Travis Durr's Webb Carroll Training Center grad
Armistice Day proved best in the Toronto Cup at Woodbine. Second early on, he advanced to the frontrunner at the top of the stretch and reached the wire first by a ½ length.
On July 26,
Flat Out Speed showed flat out speed in the Prairie Gold Lassie Stakes at Prairie Meadows. She took the lead soon after the start and led the field throughout winning by 3 ¼ lengths. She, also, came up through Frommer's breaking program.
Concrete Rose has won all four of her 2019 starts and 6 of her 7 lifetime starts. She has 5 graded stakes wins. Her latest victory came in the Saratoga Oaks Invitational on August 2. She led four other fillies over the 1 3/16's mile distance crossing the finish line 4 ¾ lengths in front.
Concrete Rose was prepared for her racing career by Justin Wojczynski in Aiken. She has career earnings of $1,218,550.
On August 3, the Elloree Training Center grad,
Dr Ruthless, was the victor of the Mass-bred Fillies and Mares Stakes at Finger Lakes. Fourth early on, she angled to the outside in the stretch and drew off to a ½ length win.
Lift Up came from off the pace to capture the West Virginia Senate President's Cup Stakes on August 3. This Webb Carroll Training Center grad had only 2 beat heading into the stretch. He surged to the front at the 1/16'th pole scoring by 1 ½ lengths.
My Lily, a former student of "Goree" Smith's, sat near the back of the pack early on in the Kentucky Downs Preview Ladies Sprint at Ellis Park on August 4. She made her move while 3 wide in the turn, collared the leader in the stretch and went on to cross the wire a head in front.
One more Elloree Training Center grad,
Tyron Summer, quickly took the lead in the Nellie Mae Cox S. at Colonial Downs on August 10. She maintained a 1 ½ length lead into the stretch and would not be denied winning by a ½ length.
At Thistledown on August 10, another of Durr's students,
Brown Buckeye, stalked the leader before taking over in the stretch and in a game effort won by a ½ length in the Honey Jay Stakes.
The Webb Carroll Training Center's good fortune continued on August 13 as
Sniper won a hard fought battle in the Bob Summers Memorial Cup at Fort Erie.
Sniper came 6 wide into the stretch and prevailed by a head at the finish line winning by 2 ¼ lengths.
Donna Freyer's former student
Carrera Cat stayed up close with the favorite nearing the stretch in the Union Avenue Stakes at Saratoga on August 15. In the stretch, she exhibited her superiority pulling away to win by 2 ¼ lengths. Donna has her Custom Care Equine operation in Camden.
Shuler Stables' disciple K Town Brass broke on top and never looked back in the Robert G. Leavitt Stakes at Charles Town on August 17. He was pressed throughout and showed good courage not being denied.
Giovanna Blues, who came up through Brad Stauffer and Ron Stevens' Legacy Stable, came from last to be best in the Flaming Page Stakes at Woodbine on August 18. She was last for the first ½ mile before moving up 3 wide in the turn. Giovanna Blues joined the leader at the top of the stretch and outdueled that one to the wire winning by 1 ¼ lengths.
Green Destiny has established herself as one of the better two-year-old fillies being much the best in the TwinSpire's Ellis Park Debutant S. on August 18. Dueling for the lead throughout, Green Destiny took the lead in the stretch drawing away to cross the wire 4 lengths in front. Green Destiny learned early lessons at Travis Durr's operation in St. Matthews.
Nancy Lynn Terhune, age 60, passed away after a long illness on August 28, 2019 at her home in Camden, SC. She became a business partner in 1998 with Sandy Dubose, helping to manage her Camden thoroughbred training center. Nancy went on to run Nancy Terhune Training Stables and was the owner of
Holy Princess, a highly-successful broodmare that produced multiple stakes winners
Aspenglow and
Silver Heart.
