Cypress Creek High School

This week we celebrate Red Ribbon week and focus on drug prevention with our Bears. Regular readers of The Bear Pride have seen wonderful stories of our students engaged in academic successes, serving others in the community (two features on this topic below), competing in all kinds of sports venues, sharing their talents in art shows, on the stage, in tough music & chorus competitions, and much more. Cypress Creek has amazing students! However, illegal drugs, underage drinking, misuse of prescription drugs and other behaviors along these lines can ruin the successes our students have worked so hard to achieve.

In this issue you will find a few key facts in support of Red Ribbon Week. I ask that any parent opening this edition kindly invest a minute to look these over. We want our Bears to continuing doing their very best while in high school and then after graduation. Thank you for your support of Red Ribbon Week and don't forget to wear RED to show that support.

Finally, this will only be a four-day week for students as Friday, October 30 is a Teacher Professional Day. Classes will resume as usual the following Monday. Make it a great Red Ribbon Week Bears!

2nd Annual Art Challengeartchallenge

We are very excited to notify our Cypress Creek families about the Ninth Circuit Court's 2nd annual Orange County School art show called:  "Exhibit 'A' Family Art Challenge."

This art show and exhibit is available exclusively to students enrolled in the Orange County Public School System. The inaugural art show last year was a huge success with almost 200 submissions and an elegant award ceremony where the winners and runners-up were presented with plaques and ribbons by Chief Judge Don Myers.

The contest is available to all grade levels K-12 and will be judged in three categories: (1) K-5; (2) 6-8; and (3) 9-12.

This year's theme is "I AM STRONG BECAUSE..." The artwork will be displayed in the lobby of the Thomas S. Kirk Juvenile Justice Center located at 2000 E. Michigan Avenue, Orlando through the end of 2020, and the winners from each category will be permanently and prominently displayed for all those who enter the Juvenile Justice Center to admire and enjoy!

** The deadline for submissions is November 19, 2020.

Makers Team has been helping our community . . .makersteam
The CCHS Makers Team*  has been hard at work making PPE to donate to local healthcare workers (below). So far we've made over 200 face shields! We are also working on reusable cloth masks.

We have a team sewing these, but we could use more help. If anyone has access to a sewing machine and would like to help fight Covid-19 AND receive hours towards their Bright Futures Scholarship, they should join our Remind for more info:

* text @cchsvsc19 to 81010

or

* Visit remind.com/join and enter the class code cchsvsc19

* The Makers Team is a group of CCHS students who work directly with MakersforCovid and GetUSPPE to supply healthcare workers with the safety equipment they need.  We make face shields using the school's 3D printers and face masks which are sewn at home.

. . . as have our Leo Club Members!leoclub
Thank you so much to our community for the many donations!
CCHS' Leo club, led by Ariadne Angelos, held a food drive to restock the school's Safe Pantry before Thanksgiving. Our selfless community donated over 500 nonperishable items!

The Leo Club sponsor, Mrs. Call, is beyond proud of this club and this amazing group of students!

Red Ribbon Weekredribbonweek

Red Ribbon Red Ribbon Week Fact #1. National Red Ribbon Week celebration pays tribute to a DEA Special Agent Enrique S. "Kiki" Camarena who was killed while trying to stop drug trafficking in the United States. During Red Ribbon Week, our school will focus on the prevention of underage drinking and tobacco use, misuse of prescription drugs as well as use of all illegal drugs.

Red Ribbon Week Fact #2. Approximately 10 percent of people who use marijuana may develop what is called a marijuana use disorder-problems with their health, school, friendships, family or other conflicts in their life. A serious substance use disorder is commonly called an addiction. The person can't stop using marijuana even though it gets in the way of daily life. People who begin using marijuana before the age of 18 are 4-7 times more likely than adults to develop a marijuana use disorder.

Red Ribbon Fact #3. Research shows that young people's brains keep developing well into their 20s. Alcohol can alter this development, potentially affecting both brain structure and function. This may cause cognitive or learning problems and/or make the brain more prone to alcohol dependence. This is especially a risk when people start drinking young and drink heavily. Research shows that people who start drinking before the age of 15 are 4 times more likely to meet the criteria for alcohol dependence at some point in their lives.

Red Ribbon Fact #4. Vaping is new, so we don't have enough research to know all the effects on the body, but many of the effects on the lungs will be the same as regular smoking. In fact, the government has reported thousands of lung illnesses and dozens of deaths of people who have vaped nicotine, marijuana or both. Human lungs are not designed to filter some of the oil in these products, and the exact causes of the illnesses are being studied. The government warns against using any vaping products with marijuana, or any that are made at home or on the street.

Red Ribbon Fact #5. We can talk to students about not taking drugs, but the biggest influence on children and preventing their abuse of drugs or alcohol is PARENTS. Please take a look at the website for the Partnership to End Addiction (https://drugfree.org/article/prevention-tips-for-every-age/#).

Thank you Cypress Creek parents and families for your support of Red Ribbon Week!

Monday's Motivational Moment!mmm

A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS USING THE LETTER 'F'

One of the things that all successful people have in common is that they have mastered the ability to manage their time. First and foremost, they have organized themselves and have goals not for just one aspect of their lives, but across the most important areas of life. Henry Kaiser, founder of the Kaiser Aluminum and Kaiser Permanente Health Care, says, "Every minute spent in planning will save you two in execution." You never regain lost time, so make the most of every moment.

One way you can help yourself do this is remembering to set out goals for six key areas that matter most, all starting with the letter 'F.' Do your best to make sure that every week you set time aside to touch base in these important areas:
  • Friendships: Keep in touch with your friends, not just online or via text, but face-to-face when possible. This can also apply to developing new friendships through others or by joining clubs & organizations that you might enjoy.
  • Family: Vince Lombardi, the famous football coach for whom the NFL's Super Bowl trophy is named after, always stressed family as one of only two areas of life that trumped his players' focus while playing for The Green Bay Packers.
  • Finances: Make sure to budget your money and set financial goals for the future. Track your progress and make corrections when you need to.
  • Fitness: This is not just physically. This applies to becoming stronger mentally and emotionally as well. Keep learning. Read for pleasure. Keep your comfort zone expanding.
  • Faith: This is not just in a religious context as that may not apply to everyone. But what does apply to everyone is faith in themselves. Keep pursuing your dreams and make sure to evaluate your progress every week. This is why having written goals is so important.
  • Fun: This last one is especially relevant given the current conditions facing most everyone with the Covid-19 pandemic. Be sure to carve out time for doing the things you enjoy most.
