From the Principal

We are so thrilled to have everyone back in school whether in-person, remote, or hybrid. Somehow, we are making it all work and are grateful to be back together no matter the format. We thank you for your understanding with the varied start and pick-up times and all the extra effort it takes to have school in a pandemic.

Our students are troopers, and while the school looks very different to them, they seem to be happy to be here. I have not heard a complaint about their new routines and limitations. We thank you for your cooperation as we navigate through this unknown territory. We are doing everything we can to keep our learning environment strong and safe.

While we have always appreciated our parent support, we now truly understand how important you all are to our community school. Without all of you helping out, we have had to adjust to a new norm. Please know you are appreciated for helping us remotely and sending good cheer our way. We are lucky to be back in school and adjusting to our new normal.

Instructional Model Change Form for 2nd Quarter
The window for changing the instructional delivery model for the 2nd quarter is open from October 5-19. Please note that this form should be filled out ONLY if you are making a change to the instructional delivery model for your child(ren). If you would like for them to stay in the same instructional model as the 1st quarter, there is no need to complete this form. The instructional model selected will be for all of 2nd quarter which runs from November 2 - January 22.

We plan to offer remote, hybrid, and in-person instruction as long as student numbers support staffing. Of course, the sooner we know your choice, the easier it will be for us to make a great plan for the students for 2nd Quarter. Please note that a change in instructional model could result in a change in teacher.

Schoology is the new learning management system that we are using at Trivium. Remote students are using this exclusively already, and we are gradually implementing usage schoolwide. Schoology will be used for teacher to parent and teacher to student communication, but schoolwide communication will still be through Bloomz. Here is a helpful link with training videos and links to walk both students and parents through the Schoology kick off!
Curriculum Corner
During our fall professional development teachers participated in a training based on the book, The Playful Classroom, by Jed Dearybury and Julie Jones. The focus of this training was on how we can still maintain a sense of playfulness, inquiry, and engagement in ALL grade levels in spite of the Covid-19 restrictions. We are so blessed at our school to have educators who are truly committed to making learning come to life for our students. Please enjoy a peek of the day in the life photo gallery below of our first month back after the longest Spring Break!

Beginning of Year Assessments

Beginning of year assessments are underway. Teachers will use the data gathered from these assessments to plan instruction based on students' needs. Assessment results will be communicated with parents at parent/teacher conferences on October 23.

mCLASS Reading: Students in grades K-2 are taking an early reading screener called mCLASS Texas Edition. This is a 1-on-1 interview style assessment. This test will give teachers important information about your child's reading readiness and profile.

mCLASS Math: Students in grades K-1 are given the mCLASS math screener, which is a 1-on-1 interview style assessment covering foundational math concepts like counting and numeracy.

ESTAR/MSTAR Math Screener: Students in grades 2-8 are taking the ESTAR/MSTAR Universal Screener, an online assessment that covers grade level content and is intended to help quickly identify students that may be at risk and need additional interventions and supports in math.

HMH Reading Growth Measure: Students in grades 3-8 are taking a reading growth test through the HMH curriculum. This will provide some initial information for teachers about your student's reading abilities.

Words Their Way: Students in grades K-6 are taking a Words Their Way diagnostic test to see what their spelling needs are. This information will help teachers place students in the appropriate spelling groups.

BOY State Assessment: Students in grades 4-10 will take a math and English assessment to obtain data on skills mastery from last year. Teachers will rely on this information for curriculum planning.

MAP Growth Testing: Students in grades 2-8 will start taking the MAP Growth Test for Reading and Math at the end of October. Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) is a computerized adaptive test that provides our teachers with information to improve both instruction and learning.
Cell phones are not allowed to be out during the school day. If students bring them on campus, they should remain in backpacks. If a teacher sees a student with a cell phone out during the day, it will be placed in one of our magnetic lock pouches and given back to the student. At the end of the day, the student may go to the front office on his/her way out to get the pouch unlocked.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Our goal this year is to make PE as fun as it possibly can be while making sure our students are as safe as they possibly can be. We are sanitizing the equipment and the playground between classes to ensure the maximum amount of safety precautions are being followed.

Everyone must wear a mask at all times. The students are allowed to take breaks to go off to the side and take their mask off then mask up and return to the game.
ATHLETICS

Our high school volleyball team had the privilege of being the first to ride in the brand new Trivium Academy van! Both the high school and middle school teams travelled to Founders Academy in Flower Mound for a scrimmage on Thursday, October 2.

The volleyball and football seasons will officially start at the end of October. As soon as the schedules are released, we will be planning for Forthcoming 2020!
We were very lucky to add a new coach, Melaney Torres, who has been teaching and coaching for 13 years. Coach Torres is working with the 4th and 5th graders. Coach B is working with the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th graders. Coach Zea is working with the Kindergarten and 1st graders. Our PE classes are on a 3 day rotation. Day one they will be on the playground and blacktop, the next day they are out on the football field playing outdoor games, and the third day they are in the gym playing our indoor games. Each day we rotate locations.

The 7-10 PE class is set up a little differently since we are on block scheduling. The first 30 minutes Coach Torres is working with them on strength and conditioning, and then Coach B has a game for them to play each day. We are having a blast with your kids this year, and we hope they are as well.
The Showcase
In spite of smaller numbers on campus and new restrictions due to COVID-19, Trivium’s band is going as strong as ever! In order to make sure students and teachers remain safe, we have refashioned our cafeteria as a bandhall/choir room. And actually, it sounds great! All students are six feet apart, and our choir director, Mr. Brookins has provided us with some industrial strength sanitizer to keep us germ free. We also keep the door open in the back to allow for more air circulation. Everyone is staying safe while they learn.

Last week, we just started our new beginners on their instruments. They are all excited to play, and this week, everyone was not only able to make a sound, but each student was able to match “Concert F” on their instrument! Exciting!

In fact, all of our band students are excited to participate this year. Everyone that is in our Concert Band is serious about getting better on their instrument. This year, in addition to pep band, Trivium will be having its first ever marching show, “The Tempest.” The students are showing up every morning at 7:15 to practice, and they’re doing great. I’ve gotten quite a few comments from the football players that practice on the field next to us that they like what they’re hearing!

2020 has been a tough year, but the Trivium Band is planning on ending it with a bang (on the drums), and we plan to make 2021 even better! Thanks to everyone who participates in and supports Trivium Band. GO KNIGHTS!
COVID-19 Response
Thank you to students and staff for doing a great job following our COVID-19 protocols! We are pleased to report that in the first four weeks of school that we have only had one positive COVID-19 case on campus.
