The Mulloon Institute  -  Enews - August 2019

From the Chairman, The Mulloon Institute

There were many descriptions I could have used to best relate the many things that occurred during August, 'abiding', 'accolade', 'auspicious' are some, or even 'anhydrous' meaning without water given the continuing dryness we are experiencing at Mulloon Creek Natural Farms (MCNF). But I've chosen ' adaptable' for a variety of reasons.

Firstly and principally, at The Mulloon Institute (TMI) and Mulloon Consulting Contracting & Certifying (MCCC) we are constantly  adapting the principles of landscape repair and rehydration to the many different landscapes we are now working in. I'll enlarge on that a little later in my update.

Secondly, August commenced with the inaugural Tony Coote AM Dinner and Lecture which was held in the week marking one year since Tony passed away, so  adapting to an organisation without his presence has been the order of the day for the Board and our team. More on that wonderful event shortly.

And adaption was very much on my and Carolyn Hall's minds as we ventured into new areas in the west of the country with a visit to Perth and its region in response to the many requests we have had from there. Western Australia brings plenty of different challenges but the principles apply, it is all about adaption.

Tony Coote AM Dinner & Lecture

Going back to the evening of Monday 5 August and the inaugural Tony Coote AM Dinner and Lecture, what a wonderful night it was. A huge thank you to all 156 who attended, it was wonderful to see such great support and Michael Jeffery's inspiring oration was a fitting tribute to Tony Coote and the legacy he has left. You can read Michael's oration HERE

With such an eminent group of people in attendance we took the opportunity to debut our  two new short videos on TMI and our work.

' Regenerating the Australian Landscape' is a four minute animation produced by  Grow Love Project, succinctly telling the story of how our landscapes became degraded and how TMI is now repairing and rehydrating them.

' Rehydrating Australia ' is a 9 minute video produced by Nviro Media , that explores TMI, Tony Coote and his ongoing legacy. Both videos can also be viewed here on our website.

P lease help us spread the word by sharing them with your friends and colleagues.

It is our intention to make the dinner and lecture an annual event with the oration by an eminent and experienced person on a subject following Tony's vision. I hope to give all our supporters plenty of notice of the 2020 event.

Updates from the field

The Mulloon Institute and Mulloon Consulting Contracting & Certifying (MCCC) are continuing to work in a variety of topographical situations across Australia as the outcomes of our work are becoming better known, and further afield. Peter Hazell and Bill McAlister returned to work with NQ Dry Tropics NRM in Queensland, while Gary Nairn and Carolyn Hall headed over to Western Australia where they toured part of the Western Wheatbelt and met with many interested and influential groups. Mulloon Community Landscape Rehydration Project

While we were in the west, back home at Mulloon planning, design and scientific instrumentation sourcing was going on at a pace for the Mulloon Community Landscape Rehydration Project (MCLRP), with Research Coordinator Luke Peel following funds coming from the Federal Government in July. Luke will have us partnering with various organisations to ensure we can acquire the best data throughout the entire catchment. We also await approval from the NSW Government for the next stage of the MCLRP and we understand our Controlled Activity Application covering the Palerang property should be approved in the next month so that on-ground works can commence in October.
Mulloon Law Committee

During August, we also have had a very generous offer of help from some of our legal followers. Consequently we have formed the Mulloon Law Committee headed up by Matt Egerton-Warburton from the law firm King & Wood Mallesons (KWM). After visiting Mulloon a few months ago Matt has become a great supporter of our work and now wants to help in a very tangible way. He is joined by Wilf Finn from the water consultancy AITHER and Mark Beaufoy, an environment and planning lawyer also with KWM.

The Mulloon Law Committee will be looking at current regularity restrictions that can impede environmental repair and will develop possible ways Government might consider changing legislation to better facilitate landscape rehydration. This is an area that needs specific expertise to get involved so TMI is very pleased to have Matt and his committee focussing their collective minds and expertise on our behalf.

Spreading the word

Once again, staff from TMI, MCNF and MCCC have been out and about presenting at various events, sharing knowledge around our landscape rehydration and regeneration work.

Read about TMI and MCNF's presentation on  career pathways in the emerging field of Regenerative Agriculture at  Agvision; Gary's presentation on 'Regenerating and Rehydrating the Australian Bush' at the Union, University & Schools Club of Sydney; plus, visits to Mulloon Creek from the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform,  Hawker College, and Holbrook Landcare.

Volunteer tree planters at Westview Farm

Thank-you

In my 'Joining June & July 2019' update I thanked the many people and organisations that had generously responded to our pre 'end of financial year' and mentioned I would provide an update as to the use of some of those funds. Clearly much of the work outlined above would not have been possible without the generosity of our supporters, but additional funds have also enabled us to employ scientist Anne Gibson as part of our Mulloon team. Anne has just joined us as I write this update so I'll provide further background and information on how she will be assisting our work in the next update. Welcome Anne!

I also want to pay tribute to the many people who have put themselves forward as volunteers. Last year we had a very successful volunteer tree planting day at Westview Farm and we plan to be organising several similar events in the near future. Thanks to everyone who has already let us know they would like to help, we look forward to working with you.

'Adaptable August' finished in some ways as it started - remembering and honouring our Founder Tony Coote and his wife Toni. Saturday 31 August was both their birthdays so a glass of champagne was consumed by some of their friends where they lay at the Home Farm. It was a time to honour, say thank-you and reflect on just how  adaptive we have become as we work towards Tony's vision of repairing and rehydrating 100 catchments across the nation.

Until my September update, all the best and thank-you all for your support.
