Longtime Republican Chair retires, wrote the book on Montgomery County Politics

Post from Marc Meyer

Now normally I would not share anything related to the Montgomery County Republican Party, but because this is the end of an era in Montgomery County politics, I will note the official announcement of the retirement of long-time Montgomery County Republican Party Chair Dr. Walter "Wally" Wilkerson. Dr. Wally, as he is known around the county, is a legend in the Texas Republican Party. And I congratulate Dr. Wally on his retirement from the rough and tumble world of party politics.

You may ask why I would praise Dr. Wilkerson, but frankly it is the playbook that he wrote in taking over Montgomery County politics, which used to be staunchly Democratic before the 1990's, that I have been trying to follow to reverse those gains. And it has been successful . . . to a point.

The most important thing that I have learned from reading the history of the Montgomery County Republican Party is that you absolutely need to have candidates running in every race possible because if you have candidates, you keep your ideas and policies in the view of the public. It is something that the Democratic National Committee has lost sight of in my opinion, that the Texas Democratic Party has only recently acknowledged and is starting to promote, and something that locally we let slide for far too long.

So while I congratulate Dr. Wilkerson on his retirement as Republican Party Chair, I also want to remind our folks that if we want to have the impact that Dr. Wilkerson did on the local political landscape, we need to emulate his example, not ideologically or strategically, but procedurally
and tactically. And that means running candidates in every possible elected position.

  VOTER ALERT!
CHECK YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION STATUS!!

In this time of aggressive voter purges, internet hacking, and various forms of voter suppression, it is extremely important to confirm that your registration status is current and active. Texas is among the states that enforces voter suspension and purging of "inactive" or voters. In Montgomery County alone, there are over 44,000 voter files which have been marked for suspension and eventual purging. For various reasons you may have had your registration suspended. Reasons may include moving without updating your information, not voting in the previous 2 elections, or having mail returned as undeliverable to the Elections administration.

Don't miss out on your right to vote. You may use these links to check your voter registration status to confirm you are up-to-date, to be sure you have the required form(s) of ID to cast your ballot, to find your precinct # and voting locations as well as a SAMPLE BALLOT for your precinct.
