USDA touts $80M for dairy initiatives
USDA’s Dairy Business Innovation Initiatives have supported regional-focused efforts tailored to the needs of dairy farmers and businesses locally. Now USDA is offering an additional $80 million funding to expand the capacity of the four initiatives that received $18.4 million last November to build on the initial investment.

Demand for high-protein whey soars, but is growth sustainable?
The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally altered the global market for high-protein whey products, which have now entered the mainstream as a super food for health-conscious consumers, according to a new report from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange. In fact, global demand for high-protein whey has grown exponentially during the pandemic as consumers around the world sharpened their focus on health and nutrition. The Nutrition Business Journal found that 36% of U.S. consumers alone increased their protein powder intake during the pandemic, an increase that has persisted through 2021.

2022 FASS-AFIA New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award
Nominate your colleague today! The deadline for nominations is April 1, 2022.
The deadline to nominate colleagues for the FASS-American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award is approaching. The award is designed to stimulate, acknowledge, and reward pioneering and innovative research that benefits humankind or is relevant to the nutrition of animals and the nutritional value of foods from animals. The award will be presented at the meeting of choice of the award winner [during the annual meeting of the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA), American Society of Animal Science (ASAS), or Poultry Science Association (PSA)] in the summer of 2022.
Deadline: All nominations must be submitted on the website no later than April 1, 2022, 11:59 p.m. CDT.

Be a Part of the Discussion: Join us for the 42nd Discover Conference - Managing Genetic Diversity for Future Dairy and Livestock Breeding
The 42nd Discover Conference- Managing Genetic Diversity for Future Dairy and Livestock Breeding will include virtual options. It will be held April 19-21, 2022 at Northern Illinois University Naperville Conference Center Hosted by the American Dairy Science Association®.
Conference Objective: Genetic diversity drives our ability to increase profitability through selection, shift selection objectives to meet new market demands, and adapt to new environments. For the past 50 years combined breeding entities have successfully made U.S. genetics globally preeminent -- increasing food security and providing marketing opportunities for U.S. breeders. With a range of new selection tools and methods to employ this is an opportune time to pause, reflect and plan how genetic diversity and inbreeding might be managed in such a way that further advances U.S. genetics for the greater good. Led by the USDA National Animal Germplasm Program, this Discover Conference is one part of a comprehensive approach to address the issue of genetic diversity. The goal of these activities is to promote a shift in how breeding, genetic improvement and genetic diversity are viewed and used in an intensive agricultural sector found in countries like the United States. Discover 42 participants, and in particular graduate students, are encouraged to submit a short abstract that describes new and innovative research findings relating to the conference program:.
Conference Topics
The call for poster abstracts is now open from the DC42 web site. “Quality Standards for Abstracts” and an “Abstract template” are there as well. Deadline to submit a title and brief abstract is 11:59 PM CDT on March 1, 2022. Abstract presentations are limited to in-person attendees and will take place in poster format on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 in Naperville, Illinois.
Who should attend: Various stakeholders in the breeding industry including breed associations, companies selling dairy and livestock genetics, companies developing and selling genomic technology, university scientists, and government agencies are all encouraged to participate. We want to extend a special invitation to dairy producers and breeders to attend this conference to lend their unique insights to the discussion. Graduate students and early career professionals are especially encouraged to attend.
