Brandt to add 1,500 new jobs in 2022

Following a year of record growth in which the company added almost 2,000 people to its workforce, the Brandt Group of Companies has announced plans to create a further 1,500 new positions in 2022.

Headquartered in Regina, Sask., the Brandt Group of Companies is a privately owned manufacturing and distribution company that serves a number of industries, including construction, mining, material handling and energy.

New Ontario agency will enhance trades training

The Ontario government has launched Skilled Trades Ontario, a new crown agency to improve trades training and simplify services within the sector.

The agency will promote and market the trades, develop the latest training and curriculum standards, and provide a streamlined user-friendly experience for tradespeople.

What’s new in construction health and safety R&D?

The BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA) knows how to keep busy.

In addition to providing training, consulting services and a wide range of safety resources, BCCSA also funds research and development (R&D).

The money comes from the organization’s Research, Development and Opportunity Fund (RDO), a special account that enables BCCSA to respond to challenges not addressed in its annual budget.

League of Champions launches safety culture campaign

The League of Champions has launched its multi-year campaign for Safety Culture. Supported by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, the program will promote the benefits of a strong safety culture, highlight best practices, and promote tools to understand and improve organizational safety culture.

Safety culture, defined as the behaviours, beliefs, and attitudes towards safety and its value within a particular organization, is critical to health and safety outcomes.

Ontario to build elementary school in Toronto condo

The Ontario government is investing $44 million to build the new Lower Yonge Precinct Elementary School within a new mixed-use condominium project, providing more student accommodation for the lower Yonge and waterfront neighbourhoods.

The project, stated Minister of Education Stephen Lecce and Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma, will create 455 student spaces as part of the government’s commitment to building modern, accessible and technologically connected schools for Ontario youth.

Graham Construction takes proactive approach to mental health

As part of its ongoing proactive measures to promote the wellbeing of its labour force, Graham Construction has formed a partnership with headversity, an online mental health and resilience building consulting service.

It was introduced to employees and their families this past December after Graham conducted its own research into the service, which was founded by psychiatrist and technologist Dr. Ryan Todd.

Habitat partners with ScotiaRISE on future trades employment

Habitat for Humanity Canada is partnering with ScotiaRISE, Scotiabank’s 10-year $500 million initiative that aims to promote economic resilience among disadvantaged groups, to grow Habitat Canada’s Every Youth Initiative with a commitment of $900,000 over three years.

Habitat Canada’s Every Youth Initiative helps young people gain experience in skilled trades through hands-on experience building decent and affordable Habitat homes.
