What a busy week here at Cushing! This week marked our first days of the Cushing Decathlon with Mr. Cuda in PE class. Students have participated in some fun events in class and will continue to do so these next few weeks. We also had an awesome spirit week which was capped off with our first school-wide virtual assembly. Our staff and students brought their A-game in terms of dress up days, energy, and school spirit.

Speaking of pride, I wanted to give a huge shout out to our buildings and grounds crew who have done an amazing job of preparing our schools for learners and staff this fall. They are also working diligently every day to keep our schools safe and clean throughout the year. They’ve been hard at work completing projects such as fabricating plexiglass dividers for our building and updating our serving space in the cafeteria. In addition to his daily work, our very own Mr. Kirby has taken up bulletin board making in his spare time. Check out some of the photos below illustrating their recent work:

DUE TODAY: TERM TWO CHANGE REQUESTS
The next opportunity to commit to a learning environment in KM schools will occur prior to the second quarter/term, which runs Nov. 9, 2020 through Jan. 22, 2021.
A link to a change request form was shared Oct. 19 and will be open through TODAY - Oct. 23.
Another opportunity to request a change in learning environment will occur in January, with the start of term 3.
If you plan to make a change, please consider the impact a potential quarantine might have on your family in the coming quarter/term and select the correct environment. Due to staffing needs and configurations:
- Changes at the elementary level will likely cause reassignment of your child’s teacher and class configuration, regardless of your family's decision. In addition, changes in either direction will not be honored after October 23.
- KM will not be able to honor changes at the middle and high school levels from distance learning to face-to-face learning after October 23.
- At the high school level, selecting distance learning may alter your student’s term 2 course selections.
NOTE: This change request form is only necessary if you want to change your environment for the second quarter/term, which begins Nov. 9.
When to Keep Your Child Home
We all have a lot on our minds and it can be tough to remember when it’s ok to send your child to school and when they should stay home due to illness. That’s why the District put together this helpful document regarding COVID19 and decision-making guidelines to keep students at home or send them to school.
Pickups During the School Day
Please continue to email your learner’s teacher and Mrs. Mirek (secretaryce@kmsd.edu) when you will be picking your child up during the school day for various appointments/reasons. Do not submit “Leave Early” absences through the Parent Portal Online Attendance. At the elementary schools, submitting the “Leave Early” option through the Parent Portal doesn't work with how we take attendance. Thanks!
Friendly Reminder: Please Send Coats, Hats, and Gloves to School
Cushing used to have a supply of extra hats, gloves, and coats we would let students borrow when they forgot theirs at home. Unfortunately, we will not be able to let students borrow items this year. It is VERY important to send warm/outdoor gear with your students now that the temperatures are getting colder. As long as it’s not raining, students will be going outside as often as they can - gym, music, snack time, recess, classroom learning time.
Lost & Found
Our Lost & Found is growing! If your learner is missing something, there is a good chance it’s here. Parents won’t be allowed to look through our Lost & Found for missing items this year, but if you are wondering if something is hanging out there, email Mrs. Mirek (secretaryce@kmsd.edu) with a description and she can look when time allows.
Pack 20 Scouting Adventures

Fall Book Fair-November 9th-20th
This year our book fair will stretch over two weeks, beginning Monday November 9th and ending on Friday the 20th. While we are able to have the fair in-person, it will look a little different than years past. Parents will not be able to tour the book fair with their children this year. Instead, students will be able to preview with their class, and then have a second opportunity to make their purchases. Purchases will be made with eWallet only this year. You can find more information about the eWallet here: eWallet Parent Commercial ** New this year, credit cards are now charged and all balances that are not used go to the Scholastic Store for a future purchase. They never expire and if parents use the school finder when they shop the Scholastic Store, our school receives 2% back on all purchases outside the online fair. For more information on how we are keeping things safe, please follow this link: https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/articles/safety.html.
Dine for Cushing at Panera: November 18th 4-8pm
