ARTS PATRON WILLIAM J. GILLESPIE HAS DIED

William J. Gillespie, a prominent supporter of Orange County's arts community, has died. He was 77 years old. Gillespie was a Marine and Vietnam War veteran, and was the grandson of one of the founding investors of Farmers Insurance Group. He became known to many in OC's arts community when he announced $6.6 million in gifts to five major organizations in 1995: Orange County Performing Arts Center  (now Segerstrom Center for the Arts), Pacific Chorale, Pacific Symphony, Philharmonic Society of Orange County, and South Coast Repertory. He continued to support arts and military veterans' causes throughout his life. Although he passionately loved classical music and dance, he was a private person who would often try to slip in unnoticed to performances. He contributed millions for the construction and installation of The William J. Gillespie Concert Organ in the new Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, and to the creation of the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Arts Orange County joins with the arts community in expressing our sadness over Bill's passing and our condolences to his friends and family. FULLERTON'S 1925 FOX THEATRE SLATED FOR 2021 RE-OPENING AFTER RESTORATION

"Though it was saved from the wrecking ball in 2004, it's been a lengthy rehabilitation process for Fullerton's historic Fox Theater but all towards a worthwhile end. That end will shine a little brighter in 2021, as the Fox is about to undergo a $3.125 million Phase 2 construction project after the first of the year." Read more here in the Fullerton Observer.

The arts in CA were the first to shut down and will likely be the last to reopen. To date, the state has not issued protocols for live events nor has it approved protocols that have been proposed by the arts sector. We need the state to issue consistent and safe reopening guidelines for all manner of cultural venues, including museums and performing arts. We can reopen the arts safely so Californians can experience and enjoy the mental health benefits of live arts! Arts Orange County joins Californians for the Arts, Association of California Symphony Orchestras, California Association of Museums and California Presenters in this campaign to build awareness and urge our state officials to act now.
