Looking out my window today, I was reminded of this 1945 song that has become a regular part of winter holiday tradition. This year, it says more to me than usual. This is a love song that speaks of lights turned low, corn for poppin’, and being held tight. It ends with, And as long as you love me so, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. As a metaphor for today, it reminds me of the importance of relationships and the little moments with the ones we love. We all will miss something this holiday season. For me, it is singing every week with my beloved church choir, something I haven’t been able to do since last March. In this season, we would be singing for the Lessons and Carols and multiple Christmas services. For you, it may be foregoing some other cherished holiday tradition, or not being able to spend time with extended family or close friends. But the simple intimacy of the old Let It Snow song reminds me to hold my family tight this year and to cherish the moments together, whether virtually or in person. This year we will create new memories and new traditions.

While this year has presented challenges, it has also afforded the 8th Grade the luxury of some time to create! How to present an 8th grade play on zoom, socially distanced - and masked? We hope that you will be entertained by our unexpected solution. We hope that farce will be an antidote to the dark of this time of year, and to the cynicism that plagues our news. The 8th grade invites you to our performance. It is suitable for all ages and will introduce you to a story that may become a tradition itself!

The 8th grade is busy re-imaging our traditional 8th grade play for our times. The story is rollicking, and their presentation varied and enthusiastic. This will be a play like no other, in every way you can imagine. Look for an invitation with a link next week!

Our next book for a mid to late January Zoom conversation is The House on Mango Street/La Casa en Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. Written in 1984, it is the story of a Latina girl growing up in Chicago. Hailed as a classic, it is a "funny, beautiful book" at 110 pages.

How to Submit a Listing
We welcome submissions of community news, items for sale, want ads, etc. Please keep notices to 500 characters or less. Listings will likely be edited. Please submit listings by COB Tuesdays with the subject "Bulletin Submission." Bulletin Board notices generally run for 3 weeks - if space allows - unless other arrangements have been made. There is no charge for listings.

Holy Nights 2020-21

The Branch Festivals Group invites you to participate in a four-part observance of the Holy Nights. Since we cannot gather in person, we will celebrate at a physical distance, but united in spirit.
Participants will read together – but each in our own home – three lectures by Rudolf Steiner, in preparation for a poetry workshop on Zoom led by poet and teacher Tina Daub. Our reading will be a deed we each carry out in the knowledge that others
in the community are also reading. We suggest you let us know that you plan to participate; on the day before each lecture-reading, we will email those who have responded, so that you can be mindful of your reading companions and have a sense of connection.

Traditional Irish Fiddle for Violinists
Baltimore-Washington Academy of Irish Culture, co-founded by Mitch Fanning and Alex Boatright, is offering an Irish fiddle class next semester, Jan 9 - May 22 on Zoom. The classes are designed for young violin players with a minimum of two years of study who want to learn more about Irish music and fiddling. Irish music, primarily dance tunes such as jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas, are great fun to play! Classes will be taught traditionally - by ear - and will explore various rhythms, scales/modes, ornamentation, bow technique and regional styles. Students will have fun learning and be well-prepared to play in traditional Irish sessions when it is safe to meet and play together in person again.

Hello! I provide virtual tutoring and educational support services to middle and high school students across the country. Along with academic subject teaching, my expertise includes helping students with study skills, time management, and homework support. I aspire to instill a curiosity and love of learning in all of my students. In these times of remote learning, it is vital to tailor sessions to students’ needs and specific learning styles.
Born and reared in Washington D.C., I have a BA in Political Science and Geography from the University of Vermont, and a Masters of Education from Antioch University. With 10 years of classroom teaching experience, I have worked in Baltimore public schools, as a tutor and substitute teacher in multiple D.C. private schools, and as a Waldorf class teacher from 2012-2019 in Southern Oregon. I have recently returned to live on the Oregon coast after traveling the world, including a multi-month stint at McMurdo Station in Antarctica.

There are networks of deep fibers, silicon circuits, tissues, salty tears and itching tendons which long to rub together in time with syncopated rhythms, deep grooves, shimmering bells and new blossoms sprouting on old forgotten tales.
