October 12—“Sing Unburied Sing,” by Jesmyn Ward is many things: a road novel, a slender epic of three generations and the ghosts that haunt them, and a portrait of what ordinary folk in dire circumstances cleave to as well as what they are trying to out run. It’s set in the fictional town of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi. .

November 9—“How to Be an Antiracist,” by Ibram X. Kendi. Kendi takes readers through a widening circle of antiracist ideas– from the most basic concepts to visionary possibilities–that will help readers see all forms of racism clearly, understand their poisonous consequences, and work to oppose them in our systems and in ourselves.

The Philippines and the US
The Philippines has had a special relationship with the United States since the islands were ceded by Spain to the United States after the Spanish-American War at the end of the 19th century. However, since the election of Rodrigo Duterte, the country has pivoted more toward China, and away from the U.S. Duterte has also launched a largescale war on drugs that many criticize for its brutality. What does the future hold for U.S, relations with the Philippines?

Will You Help?
Would You Be Willing to Be the Daytona Beach Tech Trek Contact?
We need someone to follow up with the schools to encourage teachers to nominate students, and arrange interviews. Materials and info is provided. Most jobs can be done virtually. Please contact Pat if you are willing to help. 386-299-1727
Florida Tech Trek 2021 is now in the planning stages
In June 2019 there were two Tech Trek Camps, with 48 girls attending each camp. In June 2020 we had planned for two camps, one in DeLand at Stetson University and the other at Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter but we could not move forward due to COVID-19.
In 2021 we plan to hold four camps: 2 for the girls selected for the 2020 camps and 2 for the girls to be selected in March 2021. The girls who apply will be able to choose which of the camp (Stetson or FAU) they prefer to attend. Exact dates for the camps have not been determined, but we are anticipating late June or July 2021. The camp formats will be similar but the core courses and the workshops will have some different offerings and the field trips will visit different STEM locations.
We missed our girls last summer and can’t wait to move forward for our Summer 2021 camps!

What is YOUR Legacy?
In these difficult times
The bonds of friendship and commitment continue to be sources of strength for AAUW and our members. We care passionately about achieving equity for women and girls and we care deeply about one another.
As the pandemic passes grim 6-month and 200,000-death milestones amidst continued upheaval and uncertainty on many fronts, we’ve heard from members who are wondering about its impact on gifts they’ve arranged or are considering. Some have a plan in mind. Others simply want to think out loud with us as they weigh the options. We want all our members to know: If you have questions about current giving or a planned gift or just want to talk things through more generally, we’re here for you. Whether you are looking for how to get started or want details about gifts that pay income to you now, provide support for AAUW in the future, or impact our crucial, mission-focused work today, we welcome your questions and are available to help provide the information you seek. Whatever your situation, we are most grateful for everything you do to advance equity for all.
Did you know?
Established by Congress in 2008, Estate Planning Awareness Week is observed annually during the third week in October to recognize the need, importance, and benefits of estate planning. This is an important reminder not only to make sure your own estate plan is up to date, but also to talk to your family members about your wishes.
In a 2019 survey carried out by Caring.com, 57% of adults in the United States say that they don’t have a will or trust, even though 76% of people surveyed think estate planning is important.
Estate planning is often a difficult subject to broach, as it brings the unpleasant topics of aging and death to the forefront of our minds. Nevertheless, creating an estate plan can provide peace of mind for you and your loved ones by ensuring your life savings are protected, plans are in place in the event of an illness, and property is passed down according to your wishes.
Whether you would like to learn more about estate planning in general or tax-wise ways to include AAUW as a part of your legacy, we are here to help. You may contact Heather Miller, AAUW Advancement Director at millerh@aauw.org.
