El Extraño En La Clase De Español: Parte 1

En las clases de Profe Wright, todos siempre hablan Español. Y se divierten en el proceso. While it is certainly more challenging to not only understand when the teacher speaks only in another language but then to only communicate oneself in that less familiar language, once the practice is established as the expectation in a classroom, a learning culture of effort, intellectual risk-taking, and growth takes root. Eavesdropping on one of Profe’s middle school Spanish class, one is treated to a delightful milieu of stumbling, laughter, “ums,” encouragement, malapropisms, Spanglish neologisms, and especially, new and empowering successes communicating in another language. “Chicos, ahora por favor, discuten con sus grupos las cosas que Ustedes hicieron durante el fin de semana,” Profe Wright instructs. “Ummm, yo fue, wait…yo fui al mercado para buyir [“Comprar!” Profe interjects, somehow hearing this learning opportunity from among six different simultaneous conversations]..oh yeah, para comprar la comida.” But then suddenly on this last Tuesday these mutually supportive and concurrent conversations stopped, as a masked and otherwise very sartorial stranger slipped surprisingly into the room. “Whoaaaa, who is that?” one student asked. “Ahhh, si, quien es?” Profe playfully prods. The phantom of their opera tiptoes to the front of the room, as if everyone’s attention weren’t fixed entirely on him. Or was it her?

“Que hace el ladron?” Profe asked with feigned suspense. The students are riveted, perplexed, and very inquisitive. What happened next? Stay tuned next week for the satisfying conclusion to "El Estrano en La Clase de Espanol"

Annual Fund

Thank you to everyone who has participated thus far! We have 100% Board and Staff Participation!

It is not too late to participate in the Annual Fund! Your participation in the Peabody Annual Fund provides essential operating support to Peabody. Income from tuition does not cover all of our operating expenses. The generosity of our community supports almost everything that keeps Peabody running, from salaries and classroom technology to arts and supplies. Lastly, the Fund supports financial aid as we ensure that any student can share in the Peabody experience. We hope that you will support Peabody in this area and that you will keep in mind that your Annual Fund gift, of any size, really matters to the school. Let's all MAKE AN IMPACT!

Thank you in advance for your consideration of a gift to Peabody School for the 2021-22 year and for being such strong supporters of our wonderful school! Please remember to keep us in your plans for the end of tax year giving.
Sustainability Blip of the Week: SPECIAL EDITION- Plastic and Recycling Awareness!

What is this week’s special edition?
Recently in Peabody, we have had to refocus our attention on recycling and composting awareness as many people have begun to put less effort or even not know what to compost and what to recycle and what to put in the trash. This week, we want to inform you about what to compost, what to recycle, and what can’t go in either.

Recycling: What is Recyclable?

Plastic numbers 1-2 (Check in with teachers if unsure)
1: polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE) which is commonly used for single-use beverage bottles
2: high-density polyethylene (HDPE) which is commonly used in containers, such as milk jugs, juice boxes, and some trash and shopping bags

These aren’t recycled at Peabody, but just so you know!
3: polyvinyl chloride (PVC), not going to be commonly used or seen at Peabody but can make up shampoo bottles, window frames, wire jacketing, and cooking oil bottles
4: low-density polyethylene (LDPE), mostly used in shopping bags, dry cleanings, and bottles
5: polypropylene (PP), can be found in yogurt containers, syrup and medicine bottles, bottle caps, straws
6: polystyrene (PS), which can be used to make disposable plates and cups, egg cartons, carry-out containers
7: Miscellaneous, not all of these can be recycled here at Peabody so check in with your teacher, can be found in three- and five-gallon water bottles, sunglasses, signs and displays, certain food containers, nylon

Plastic containers (mostly with necks)
Office Paper (White paper)
Newspapers and Magazines
Cardboard (flattened)
Most boxes as long as they are CLEAN (pizza, cereal, and juice)
Glass bottles and jars, cans made of tin or steel, aluminum foil
Empty aerosol cans

Here is a helpful and really informative link to The Climate Collaborative’s blog with specific information for Charlottesville and Albemarle residents about what to recycle.
