Conversation:  Grief: Intrinsic to Developmental Change

Feelings of sorrow, anguish, distress, and heartache are expressed at different degrees of intensity during treatment. Often, as patients start feeling better, they may begin to grieve for themselves. An aspect of this type of grief might be expressed by their sadness over the loss of what could have been. The response of the therapist to the expression of grief in treatment has the potential to facilitate developmental growth in the process of change.

Course Objectives:
1. Attendees will be able to define grief, in general.
2. Participants will be able to identify expressions/representations of grief in transference and countertransference reactions.
3. Participants will learn ways of responding to patients when grief is expressed in treatment.
