"Happyish: The Upside of Negative Emotions"

At a time when we are under extraordinary duress, "putting on a happy face" seems almost suspicious, and yet, social media keeps churning out perky family BBQ snapshots and "think positive" pep talks. Subscribing to the "positive psychology" gospel these days requires us to reject our so-called "negative emotions" when they might naturally arise. In fact, we force faux happiness so much in our culture that it breeds unhappiness and curated contentment. In this sermon, we'll explore the upside of the shadow side and how these darker emotions can help us navigate over life's sometimes bumpy terrain.

Splash! We're having a Drive-By Water Communion!
Creating ritual in the virtual realm is a challenge, but we're giving it a go with a Drive-By Water Communion. Rev. Robin and Linda Ochi will be masked and outside at Beacon on Sunday, September 6, from 9:30-11:00 AM and on Tuesday, September 8, from 5:30-7. Please drive by with a small container of water that represents a place that is sacred to you, whether it's your garden hose or the Colorado River. Please bring an index card or a piece of paper with your name and a brief description about the water's symbolism. We'll be taking pictures and videos and including the write-ups in our September 13th recorded service.

Starting in the August 23 service, Rev. Robin will include short Zoom- recorded snippets with congregants, "chiming in" on a centering question, such as "What sustains you?" "Where do you find hope?" "What brightens your day during this murky time?" Joys and Sorrows welcome, too! Let Rev. Robin know you'd like to "chime in" and she'll schedule a short zoom session with you.

We have a new Music Director!
Our new Music Director, Roomie Wood, makes her debut in the service on August 9. Roomie grew up in Tempe and is currently a Senior at NAU, studying choral music education. Roomie plays the piano and loves to sing. She has a warm spirit and playful sense of humor. Roomie is looking forward to being part of the Beacon team and making music with the choir...virtually! Here is a little more about her, in her own words.
Hi I'm Roomie Wood, I'm currently a senior Choral Education Major at NAU, with the long term goal of teaching at a public high school. I have sung in choir for ten years but has most notably been a part of the Shrine of the Ages Choir at NAU for two years. In the past, I have accompanied the Men's Chorus at NAU and various vocalists, and have taught piano lessons to kids ages ranging from 4-14. I'm really excited to start working with the choir and preparing music for services! Reach out at [email protected]

(pronounced Jexi). I am a wife and a mother to 4 wonderful children. I was born in Caracas-Venezuela so my first language is Spanish. I have been doing office and managerial work for 6+ years, and I'm very excited to get to know all of the congregation at Beacon UU.

We'll be taking a break from structured RE lessons online until September 13, when we'll be launching an exciting collaboration for our elementary and middle school youth with the Granite Peak UU Church in Prescott, AZ.

In the meantime, be a creator in whatever forms inspire you - painting, cooking, building, knitting, writing, music, gardening, movement....you name it! There are many creative ideas in the lessons we have archived on our website from the Dr. Seuss and Wonder World programs. Dip in on your own schedule to any of these lessons which include videos, discussion ideas, and hands-on projects.

Gathering of the Week: August 21st Multi-generational Dinner Church (Longmont UU Presence)

The LUUP dinner church is an opportunity for a multi-generational community to share a meal and meaning-making rituals. Each time we gather, we explore questions and do an activity around a theme. The experience is interactive and accessible to people of many ages.

A novel for our time: Community discussion of The Plague by Albert Camus
The Plague was published by Albert Camus in 1947 and tells the story from the point of view of an unknown narrator of a plague sweeping the fictionalized city of Oran (a French-Algerian town). Camus used as source material the cholera epidemic that killed a large proportion of Oran's population in 1849, but situated the novel in the 1940s.
The Martin-Springer Institute at NAU is hosting a book group, featuring the reading of Albert Camus' The Plague. This would be a one-time event this Fall September 24th Register here. Beacon UU has been specifically asked to participate, along with other faith communities in Flagstaff. The discussion will be moderated and led by Gioia Woods (NAU Professor of Humanities) and Bjorn Krondorfer (Director of Martin-Springer Institute and Professor of Religious Studies). If you wish to participate, please read this classic and be prepared for some rich discovery and dialogue.
The Touchstone Chalice Circles We celebrated when man first stepped on the moon. But the view back to earth brought a vision that showed what an incredible planet we live on. We call this Mother Earth. In August we can explore the Creation of this planet and our relationship to it. Creation requires imagination, intention, compassion, courage, discipline and power. Social Justice Allies
Call to Join Beacon's Activate Teams
Beacon's mission and our UU faith call us to work together towards the goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all. In order to keep our Beacon community on that track, we are seeking motivated volunteers to join two Beacon teams with a social justice orientation:
- Activate Team for Electoral Issues (3 or more people)
- Activate for BIPOC Allyship Team: (3 or more people)
Teams work together to decide their agenda's. If you are interested in joining either of these teams, please contact Rev. Robin within the next week.

Hollaback is a nonprofit on a mission to end harassment - in all its forms. They provide free trainings throughout the year to give people the resources to respond to, prevent and intervene in instances of harassement. You can also sign up for an individual account if you prefer that, or want to take advantage of the gasoline discounts. You have to pick Beacon as your beneficiary when you set up your own account. 2. If you shop on Amazon, please use "Amazon Smile" and choose Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation (do not abbreviate UU) as your recipient. We will receive a 0.5% for every purchase and that can add up! Remember that you have to start each shopping session at smile.amazon.com for us to receive the donation.
