Historical Tidbit: Thanksgiving
|
At Plymouth Plantation costumed interpreters reenact the first Thanksgiving, when 90 Indians dined with the 50 surviving Pilgrims. The Indians provided five deer for the feast: the Pilgrims cooked up codfish, sea bass, and wild fowl.
When families sit down to Thanksgiving dinner each year, they owe at least a little thanks to Sarah Josepha Hale. Fervent in her belief that a day should be set aside to express gratitude for the year’s blessings, she almost single-handedly created the holiday in the mid-19
th
century.
As the editor of
Godey’s Lady’s Book,
Hale controlled the country’s most widely distributed periodical, and from 1846 on she used it to battle for her cause. Every November she published “traditional” recipes for Thanksgiving dishes, accompanying them with editorials demanding official recognition. Each summer she also wrote letters to the governors of every state. Finally, in 1863 Abraham Lincoln gave in and issued the proclamation that made the holiday an annual event.
Participants in the first Thanksgiving in 1621 would scarcely have recognized Hale’s notions of traditional fare. Swans were as likely to have graced their tables as wild turkeys. Pilgrims thought potatoes inedible, apples and sweet potatoes were unknown in New England; and since there was no sugar, cranberries were not made into a jellied sauce.
But then, Americans have always tended to celebrate Thanksgiving in their own way. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid imported oysters and Roquefort cheese to Utah for their Thanksgiving feast. In Norwich, Connecticut, young men used to celebrate by lighting bonfires on hilltops. Until World War II, New Yorkers were awakened by the horn blasts of “fantasticals,” companies of working-class masqueraders who paraded under names such as the “Gilhooley Musketeers.” Then they’d retire to the parks to picnic, and later to gala balls, where they danced until dawn.

"Just wanted to add to the DIMOUT article…They left out that the top half of all car headlights had to be painted black!! I was only 5-6 at the time of this DIMOUT, but I remember it very clearly. My grandfather, Louis C. Stearns of Bridgewater fame (at the time) was a “warden,” and he had to go around his street with a billy club and knock on all doors IF their lights were showing above that recommended. Scary times!!"

Dec 7th is the BIG DAY!
Getting close!! Does anyone have any questions about the parade?
Staging: Industrial Park on Laurel Street. All participants should be entering from Laurel. Participants can report to staging and get their assigned space number from any of the volunteers or shuttle bus monitors. Vehicles in the parade can get their space number as they drive in/check in.
NO drop offs should occur on Spring Street - large vehicles and deliveries may occur on Spring - too dangerous to drop off children in that area.
NO unaccompanied small children will be allowed on the shuttle bus.
Floats must be decorated and in place by 9am- judging begins at 9:15.
Shuttle stops: Saint Johns AND the Jr/Sr. High School. Look for "Shuttle Stop" signs. Get on the shuttles EARLY - they fill up quick and traffic slows them down.
PLEASE take all coffee cups and other items with you when you leave the staging area - BRING IT IN TAKE IT OUT.
There will be 2 porta-potties at the staging area. No trash buckets.

The COA is happy to continue with this favorite yearly tradition. We will be returning to the beautiful Lakeside Villa (formerly Monponsett Inn) located at 550 Monponsett Street in Halifax. Entrée choices are Baked Fish or Chicken Supreme.
We have tried to keep the price per person as reasonable as possible so that all can enjoy an afternoon complete with a wonderful meal, entertainment and door prizes to kick off the holiday season.
Our party is, once again, being partially funded by a grant from The Trustees for the Home for Aged Men in the City of Brockton. Happy Holidays to all of you from all of us and we hope to see you at the party! Space is limited!
We will be collecting donations for the local food pantries. The EBCOA van is available for transportation to this event.

Tree Decorating Contest
Christmas on the Common is once again upon us! The annual tree decorating contest will be held on the night of the lighting of the town tree, December 5, 2019. The theme this year is "A Christmas Packed with Memories". "Packed" to honor Bob Parkard who past away this year, he was the head of the Christmas Parade for our town for years. The ornaments should be safe for the birds and the environment. Feel free to reach out to me very soon if your group is interested in decorating a tree this year. We would love to have you decorate a tree this year and keep the tradition going. If you think you need 2 trees because of the size of your group I can work that in as well. Feel free to share my email with other groups and neighbors. All are welcome! The more the merrier and the merrier our little town will look!!!

Don’t forget to order your gift cards soon! Take care of holiday gift lists early while supporting EB’s music program. Here’s how it works: using our order form (print it yourself at

), you buy various gift cards at face value. Our fundraising partner, United Scrip, then sells the cards to us at a discounted rate, and the percentage difference comes back to our group as profit. There are two remaining deadlines for ordering: 11/15 and 12/6. These are the same gift cards that you would purchase at individual stores, without the hassle of driving there! (You pick them up at the Middle School ten days after the order deadline.) Find gifts for anyone on your holiday list, or buy cards for birthday, anniversary, and thank you gifts, all year long.
