Research, Publications and Presentations
Assistant Professor Hong Vu, Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo and doctoral students Matthew Blomberg, Yuchen Liu and Fatemeh Shayesteh have recently had a paper accepted to Science Communication. The paper, "Social media and environmental activism: Framing climate change on Facebook by global NGOs," looks at the use of several message elements including impacts, actions, and efficacy in the ways 189 global climate NGOs from 18 countries communicate climate change. Hung Viet Do is another co-author of the paper. 

Doctoral student Pan Liu gave a talk entitled “Ideologies behind media systems between China and the United States” in the Global Media class at Eastern New Mexico University. He was invited by Professor Ed Caffrey, and the talk was delivered Oct. 14 via Zoom. Pan wishes to thank doctoral student Annalise Baines for her thought-provoking ideas in preparing the talk. 

Steve Rottinghaus, career and outreach coordinator, led a Zoom session on LinkedIn, resumés and virtual interviews for Baker University students on Oct. 11.  

The Center for Undergraduate Research is taking applications for the Spring 2021 UGRA competition. The deadline for student proposals is Oct. 29. Online guidance and individual virtual advising appointments are available to help students prepare strong applications. More information here.

The University Scholarly Achievement Awards, which recognize mid-career faculty members at KU, are now open for nominations. The awards cover all fields of scholarship including arts, humanities, architecture and design, music, mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, medicine, clinical science, pharmacy, social sciences, social welfare, education, journalism, law and business. Student News and Opportunities
The University Daily Kansan has been named a 2020 Online Pacemaker Award finalist in the Associated Collegiate Press college media competition. Pacemaker finalists will be recognized and the Pacemaker winners announced virtually at 5 p.m. Oct. 22 during the Fall National College Media Convention. Read the news release.

The Dow Jones News Fund invites college juniors, seniors and graduate students to apply for paid summer 2021 internships in data journalism, digital media, business reporting and multi-platform editing. The application deadline is Nov. 9. The News Fund will select up to 80 college journalists for internships with news organizations across the country. Those selected also will benefit from weeklong, pre-internship training, $1,500 scholarships, memberships to journalism groups, and access to the DJNF alumni network for jobs and mentoring. The Carnegie-Knight News21 program is now accepting applications. During the spring semester, students take part in a seminar taught by News21 Executive Editor Jacqueline Petchel. During the summer, fellows work full time out of a digital newsroom at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. Learn more here.
ACES scholarships: Applications are now being accepted for scholarships through the ACES Education Fund, which awards six scholarships annually. ACES: The Society for Editing is the nation’s leading organization of editing professionals, educators and students. Learn more and apply here.

The Reynolds Journalism Institute’s 2020-21 Student Innovation Competition at the Missouri School of Journalism invites college students to participate by tackling engagement with a news organization. A student or student team will partner with a news organization to devise an engagement idea innovative to that organization. Applications detailing the team’s idea are due by Oct. 31. The chosen finalist teams will implement their idea at the partner news organization for three months before presenting the results on Feb. 26, 2021, in front of judges and the public on Zoom. First-place prize is $10,000. More details here.

The Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association is now accepting applications for its Reese Cleghorn Internship program, which supports developing college-student journalists by providing experience in newsrooms in Maryland, Delaware or the District of Columbia through eight-week paid summer internships. Mark McCormick, William Allen White Foundation trustee, has been appointed by Gov. Laura Kelly to the Kansas African American Affairs Commission. The commission devises strategies to address the public policy concerns of the African American community through its partnerships with state agencies, corporations and foundations.
