We are halfway through the 2nd quarter. If you don't regularly check HAC, please check your child's grades and encourage him/her to seek help if needed.
The information in this Panther Press is for the next 2 weeks. We wish everyone a fun-filled Thanksgiving break with family and friends. Safe travels to those leaving the area.
PTSO had 54 families purchase Panther Pride Banners that are hanging on the fence in the parent loop. All of the funds from the banner sales went towards purchasing 30 laptops for a new laptop cart. Thank you to all of these families for contributing along with our National Honor Society and a very generous $5,000 donation from an anonymous family. We are so very fortunate to live in an area with such supportive parents!
The Media Center will be CLOSED Monday and Tuesday after school and during the school day Tuesday.
In an effort to help teachers with make-up or re-take summatives, the administration is supervising testing in the auditorium on Friday mornings. If a teacher tells your child to attend the school testing on a Friday, he/she needs to be at the student gate at 8:30am and report directly to the auditorium. Students will not be allowed to enter after 8:40am.
Nease is participating in the Annual Marine Corps Reserve's Toys For Tots Drive. We are competing against the other high schools in St Johns to see who can collect the most toys. Nease has won the last 2 years, so bring in those toys through December 2nd. Collection boxes are in the main office, Media Center, and C-pod.
Semester exams will be here before we realize it. Exams will be administered December 17th through the 20th. Exams may not be taken early, so it is extremely important that students are present. Make-up exams will be administered when students return in January.

JROTC Partners with K9s For Warriors. On Monday, November 18, K9s For Warriors brought over a team of 6 dogs in training to practice, observe and train for military color guards. Nease’s varsity color of Isabelle Rivera, Lindy Gostage, Ethan Wissel and Dylan Dosio performed a variety of routines as the dog trainers were teaching the dogs to obey and settle while rifles and flags are twirling about. Head dog trainer Erik Kolbow requested the training session as his dogs had been having trouble remaining calm during military ceremonies. K9s hopes to bring all new dogs over the Nease for training in the future.

The Stellar Academy of Engineering’s amazing student team brought home first place in St. Johns County Project Innovation competition held this week! Their project, “A Road to Less Plastic,” focused on an idea to help keep plastic waste out of waterways by incorporating it into roads. Our team beat 9 others from surrounding high schools to claim the top spot. Congratulations to the students, and to Mr. Arias and Ms. Hunter! The students will get to split a $2,000 prize.

Parents:
Do you work for a company that hires high school graduates? Would you like an opportunity to recruit Nease High School seniors? We are hosting a technical college and career fair on April 1
st
to show students opportunities outside of a traditional 4 year degree. If you are interested in participating in this event, please reach out to Mrs. Smith at
[email protected]
.
Seniors:
College Board is giving away scholarships for completing the steps for applying to college and financial aid. Click on the links below for more information.
Seniors can earn money from CollegeBoard for the following
:
- Complete the FAFSA: $1,000
- Now Open for Seniors Through February
- Students should complete the FAFSA® form to apply for financial aid. They must provide a screenshot of their FAFSA confirmation email if selected for the scholarship (undocumented and international students are exempt).
In order to apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a student AND a parent must first create an FSA ID. Students and parents can do that online here:
https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out/fsaid
.
This is something that can be completed in Counselor Corner. Parents who have older students may have already completed this process previously. Once students and parents have their FSA ID, they can complete the FAFSA on-line here:
https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa
.
- Apply to Colleges: $1,000
- Now Open for Seniors Through February
- Students should apply to at least two colleges they want to attend and submit the names of the colleges to earn an entry for the scholarship. Students may earn one additional entry for every additional college application after their first two, up to a maximum of six total applications.
In addition to the College Board Scholarships, seniors that have not applied to Bright Futures should make sure to complete their application before the holiday break. Students who meet the criteria and who have applied for the scholarship prior to the end of the first semester can lock in the scholarship in January.
In order to apply for State Scholarship & Grant Programs (Bright Futures), a student must first
Create a Student Account/Profile
at the following link:
http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/
. Click on State Grants, Scholarships & Applications. Click on
Create a Student Account.
Students will receive an email with their User ID and temporary password. After creating a
Profile
, students will have the option to continue directly to the FFAA.
The application typically takes 10 minutes or less to complete, so students are welcome to come to counselor corner and complete the application with their counselor or do it on their own from home. Students DO NOT need to have met the requirements prior to applying for the scholarship. While we encourage students to meet the requirements for the scholarship as soon as possible, students have until the June SAT/ACT test dates to continue to try and earn the required test scores. As a reminder, students need qualifying GPA, SAT or ACT, and Community Service Hours in order to earn the scholarship. Any student that meets those requirements and applies will earn the scholarship.
Please make sure you are checking the e-mail address that you provided to your Naviance account as we will start sending larger senior specific updates through Naviance. Returning students should have received their Naviance registration code last spring in order to set up their accounts. If you need that information again, you can get it from your counselor. Once you have registered, you can continue to access your account here:
https://student.naviance.com/allennease
The majority of students should have submitted their college applications at this time. As we enter notification season, please update your counselor and Naviance as you get news of your acceptances!
Juniors:
As we enter the holiday season, now is a great time to see if you can incorporate college visits into your travel plans. If you could schedule a housing tour along with a financial aid and admissions presentation with a meal on campus, it would go a long way in helping you get a sense of where you might want to be 2 years from now.
Counselors visited Junior English classes this past week. We worked with students to confirm that they are aware of all the classes that they need to graduate. We also worked on developing their college lists of potential schools and careers. Students received their Naviance codes so that they can log into their Naviance accounts here:
https://student.naviance.com/allennease
and start saving potential colleges and careers to their “Colleges I’m Thinking About” and “Careers I’m Thinking About” sections. Students are encouraged to start working on their resumes in Naviance as these will be required for their college letters of recommendation next year. Please ask your student to review the packet that they received. It includes their remaining credits for graduation, SAT/ACT test dates, Bright Futures information, and their checklist for college/career planning.
It is also time for Juniors to start taking the SAT and ACT. Your goal is to have a solid test score by the end of the school year so that you can start submitting college applications in the summer and fall of next year. You can register for the SAT at
www.collegeboard.org
and the ACT at
www.actstudent.org
. Students on free and reduced lunch can see Ms. Harden in guidance for 2 fee waivers for each test.
Sophomores:
We hope that you all took the PSAT this month and it was a positive testing experience for you. As the first nine weeks comes to a close, you should be reviewing your grades and evaluating your study habits. It is important to make sure and keep your grades up so you keep your opportunities open.
Freshman:
All Freshman World History classes went to the computer lab on Tuesday 10/22 or Thursday 10/24. Students created their Naviance accounts (a huge college and career resource), learned about graduation requirements and tutoring opportunities, took a strengths survey, and more. Please have your student share with you the packet they received that includes their 9
th
grade “stay on track” checklist.
Community Service Opportunity:
Coastal Oaks is hosting their Annual Winter Festival that will include winter themed family fun for all ages.
