Rector's Ramblings

I am so pleased that we are engaged with reading support at Burroughs Molette Elementary School and the new Reading Academy partnership with the Boys and Girls Club this year, and will continue to do so. I hope you take note of the opportunities to get involved elsewhere in this week's News You Can Use, although I'll say more about those opportunities here as well, for those who make it to the end. Reading is an essential life skill for everyone, which means helping a child to read pays dividends well beyond the investment we make in them when they are young. Reading sets the stage for success in school, and beyond, a truth to which everyone reading this can attest.

Worship

Advent Worship Schedule
Join us for weekly worship during Advent at Christ Church. Regular weekend worship services take place on Saturdays at 5:30 pm at St. Ignatius Chapel, on Demere Road, and on Sundays at 8:00 am, 9:15 am*, and 11:15 am at Christ Church, Frederica.  Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for younger children, takes place during the 9:15 am worship service at Christ Church. On Wednesdays, at 12:00 pm, a Healing service is held at Christ Church and at 6:30 pm, X Church takes place.

(*During Advent, there will be only one 9:15 am service in the church.)
Outdoor Nativity
Make sure to come by and see the nearly life-size Nativity on the lawn at Christ Church during the Advent season. The beautiful figures were donated in loving memory of Bob Johnson.
Advent Choral Evensong - December 17

Please join us at Christ Church on Tuesday, December 17 , at 5:30 pm and experience the meditative music of Advent, during this Choral Evensong, led by the Christ Church Trebles and Cantori. All are welcome!
Lessons and Carols - December 21 & 22
Advent lessons come to life with beautiful music during Lessons and Carols, presented on December 21 at St. Ignatius Chapel, at 5:30 pm, and on December 22, at the 9:15 and 11:15 am liturgies in historic Christ Church. Our Choirs will be on hand and guest musicians will join us. We offer this traditional service on the Fourth Sunday of Advent, as the excitement builds for the birth of Christ Jesus. From our youngest Choristers to our youngest at heart, the music will offer a wide variety of styles. Please join us!
Poinsettias for Christmas
You may purchase beautiful memorial poinsettias to remember a loved one and decorate our worship spaces for Christmas. The cost is $30 per poinsettia and checks should be made payable to the Christ Church Flower Guild. Please send checks and the names of those you wish to honor to Ethel Horton, at 402 Palm Court St. Simons Island, 31522 by Sunday, December 15.
Creating Christmas Wreaths for Our Churches
All those who are interested in learning how to make a wreath or who would like to make a wreath for Christmas to adorn the walls of one of our worship spaces are welcome to come join the Altar Guild and Flower Guild in the Parish House on Friday, December 20 at 9:00 am. The only things you need to bring are clippers and your gloves; we will provide cedar, wreath forms and easy-to-follow instructions. Or just come have a cup coffee and enjoy the fellowship. For more information, please contact Anna Belle McCaskill at [email protected].

Formation

Adult Sunday Morning Class
Coming up in Advent: Faithful by Adam Hamilton
The Adult Class is reading  Faithful: Christmas Through The Eyes of Joseph   during Advent, ending on December 22. We'll take a brief break on December 29 and January 5, then on January 12, we will begin a study entitled Reckless Love: Jesus' Call to Love Our Neighbor which will take us to February 23, 2020. Then, on March 1, 2020 (the first Sunday in Lent) we'll begin a Lenten Study for the seven weeks of Lent. All are invited to join us. The class meets in the Adult Sunday classroom in the Parish House. For more information, contact Bob Brown at
[email protected] .
Men's Study Group

The Men's Discussion Group gathers on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am in the Youth Room in the Parish House. They have begun a new study of Thomas
Sowell's Discrimination and Disparities, which presents a wide array of empirical evidence to challenge the idea that different economic outcomes can be explained by any one factor, be it discrimination, exploitation, or genetics. If you'd like to join the group , please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .
Wednesday Advent Study

Fr. Tom and Rabbi Rachael Bregman are leading Wednesday lunch-time sessions in Advent that take a deep dive into the history of the birth of Christ. The study is utilizing Amy-Jill Levine's, Light of the World: A Beginner's Guide to Advent and will explore the biblical texts surrounding the story of the birth of Jesus, tracing the Christmas narrative through the stories of Zechariah and Elizabeth, Mary, the journey to Bethlehem, and the visit from the Magi. The group meets on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm through December 18. A simple lunch will be served each week. Books are available through the Christ Church bookstore for $11.50. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected]
Thursday Contemplative Group

Randy Siegel is leading a weekly morning contemplative group in the Vestry Room of the Christ Church Parish House. Contemplative practices help us know God. Through prayer, worship, scripture, meditation, and silence, we experience God's presence and are healed, renewed and transformed by God's love. The group will meet on Thursdays from 11:00 am to Noon on December 12, 19 and January 2 and 9. (We will skip the week of Christmas.) Come when you can! For more information, contact Randy Siegel at 828-301-0819.

Breakfast with St. Nicholas - December 7BreakfastStNick

Many thanks to all who helped make Breakfast with St. Nick such a lively, joyous event on Saturday, December 7! Our talented kitchen crew dished out delicious pancakes, sausages and scrambled eggs to well over 100 children and their families, and our industrious volunteers kept everyone entertained with exciting games and crafts. Of course, St. Nicholas's visit was the highlight of the morning, as he passed out golden chocolate coins and cheery words to all the children. Thanks to everyone who lent a hand to the festivities -- last, but not least, to the set-up and clean-up crews who made the Parish House shine on both ends of the event!

See lots of photos of the all the fun here .

Outreach

Christmas Baskets
Our annual collection of food for Christmas baskets begins December 7 and concludes on December 19 at 9:00 am. Please bring non-perishable food items for Christmas dinners to St. Ignatius or the Christ Church parish hall, or you may donate cash or checks, marked for Christmas baskets. Volunteers are needed to assemble and deliver the baskets on Thursday, December 19 at 9:00 am.  Contact: Jeannie Wade at  [email protected]
Backpack Buddies

On December 11, our Backpack Buddies gathered by the Parish Hall Christmas tree and listened to holiday tunes, as they worked faster than Santa's elves to pack hundreds of holiday food bags for Glynn County youngsters. And even after all that work, they won't get too long of a winter's rest, because packing starts again on Wednesday, January 8, at 1:30 pm. Come join them for the fun!

You can also honor a loved one this Christmas by sponsoring weekend food for a child for an entire school year for $100, or for one semester for $50. For more information, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected]
SSI MOMS Give Gift to Backpack Buddies
Many thanks to the members of the St. Simons MOMS Club, who presented a generous donation to the Backpack Buddies this Wednesday, to help purchase food for local children in the Backpack Buddies program. The St. Simons MOMS Club is part of the International MOMS Club, which supports mothers and children around the world.
Christmas at Sea
Every year during the season of Christmas, the International Seafarers' Center spreads the love of Christ through their Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7th and the Center hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present.

If you'd like to be part of this ministry, it's as easy as filling a clear plastic shoebox or ditty bag with 12 - 15 item from the list found  here and bringing it to either the church office in the Parish Hall, or to the International Seafarers Center, at 307 Newcastle Street in Brunswick.
Christ Church Comforters Caps
Look at all these beautiful caps created by our talented Christ Church Comforters!  If you're filling a box for a seafarer and you'd like one, please contact Mtr. Ashton at [email protected] or Gay Barron at [email protected] . Mtr. Ashton also has plastic shoe boxes that have been donated to be used for the seafarers, so please come by and get one, if you need one.
Angel Tree for Safe Harbor Street Beat Teens
The Angel Tree is back this year in the Parish Hall. Many thanks to all who have taken ALL of the angels already! This year we are helping the teens in the Safe Harbor Street Beat program experience the spirit of Christmas by gifting them with one wish from their Christmas list.

Please bring unwrapped gifts, or gifts in unsealed gift bags, with the angels affixed to the outside, to the church office in the Parish Hall, by this Friday, December 13. For more information, please contact Donna Purdy at [email protected].
Help Children at Burroughs Molette Whenever You Buy Groceries at Harris Teeter
You can help Burroughs Molette Elementary School every time you shop at Harris Teeter. Simply tell your cashier (during check-out) that you want Burroughs Molette's account number (6700) linked to your Harris Teeter VIC card. Once the account number is linked, every time you shop during the program, 2% of your Harris Teeter brand purchases will be contributed by Harris Teeter to the school. It's that easy!
The ECW Tour of Homes Needs You Now!
Last spring, 29 agencies primarily serving women and children in need, benefited from ECW's Annual Tour of Homes, and from the sale of our Christ Church Cookbook. This fall, we again are asking for generous donations that will help in so many lives. We look to our church family, and beyond, to make it happen. If you'd like to be a patron or volunteer on Tour Day, March 21, please contact Susie Henning at  [email protected]), or Tami Black at  [email protected], or visit christchurchtourofhomes.org.
ECW Cookies, Cookbooks and Aprons are In for Holiday Giving
New ECW cookbooks, cookie tins and aprons  are in and make perfect holiday gifts! All are available for purchase in the church office in the Parish House and in the Christ Church Gift Shop. Cookbooks and aprons are $20 and cookie tins are $15. All proceeds benefit nonprofits in our area, with a focus on women and children.

Emergency Contact Information Needed
We are in the process of adding emergency contact information for parishioners into the Christ Church Realm database. When you log into your Realm profile, you may enter the information yourself. If you need help with Realm, please contact Glenn at [email protected]. If you prefer not to use computers, call Mother Ashton at the church office, at 912-638-8683, and she will happily take your information and enter it into the database.
Making a Charitable Distribution
In this season of giving, and as we wrap up 2019, we've got some information to share about making charitable donations from the required distribution of your IRA, should it apply to you.

Did you know that you can make a donation of all or a portion of the Required Minimum Distribution from your retirement account to Christ Church, and your donation will be tax-exempt? Here's how it works.I f a person is at least age 70½, they must take at least a minimum distribution from their IRA or incur a penalty equal to one-half of the otherwise required minimum distribution amount. They may take more than the minimum at their discretion. These individuals may instruct their IRA account manager to distribute any amount of their choosing to one or more tax-exempt charities such as Christ Church.

When that is done, it is considered to be a tax-exempt contribution. Christ Church would acknowledge to the giver the receipt of that contribution from their IRA. Also, this contribution is tax-exempt even if the individual does not itemize deductions for income tax purposes because the IRA account manager would not identify this to the IRS as reportable income in accordance with the tax code. For more information about Qualified Charitable Distributions, check out the Internal Revenue Service Publication 590-B, "Distributions from Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs)" or speak with your tax advisor.
A Note from the Christ Church Vestry Wardens
We are thankful for the blessings that have been bestowed on this congregation. As is our custom, if you would like to make a monetary contribution for the staff's hard work this year, bring or send your contribution to Christ Church with a notation for the Staff Recognition Fund in the memo line. At his request, Father Tom will not be included in the distribution of funds collected. Contact: Wallace Harrell at 912-279-1010.

End of Year Gifts

As we approach the final days of 2019, we'd like to extend an invitation for year-end gifts that would benefit Christ Church and may benefit you if you find yourself looking for additional annual deductions. If you would like to make a gift via stock transfer, or if you have any other questions about year-end giving, please contact our Financial Administrator, Stan Kyker or our Parish Administrator, Glenn Queener. They can both be reached at 912-638-8683. If a year-end gift fits into your plans, thank you!

Giving Made Easy

You may use the CCF website to make pledges, donations and payments for some activities. Just select "Giving" at the top of the CCF homepage. This brings you to the pay portal. The process is fast and easy and allows you to pay by credit or debit card or by electronic bank transfer. You may change or add new payment methods at any time. Contact: Stan Kyker, CCF financial administrator at 912-638-8683.
