"Some really bad things happened in here last night," began East's Culinary Arts teacher Emily Sonneman this morning, gesturing to the four kitchens behind her, each set up to resemble a different "culinary crime scene."
"There's stuff on the floor that's slippery. Please be careful." Her 2nd hour student detectives stepped gingerly around the ketchup, flour, rice, and puppy kibble hazards to investigate just what went wrong in each of these spaces. It's her creative way of engaging students in otherwise vanilla topics like food cross-contamination and kitchen safety.
After recording their observations, students wrote news briefs summarizing the sequence of events they imagine could have led to Exhibit A, now roped off with caution tape. Standing by for those reports...
