This week WWS is recognizing
Día de Muertos
(Day of the Dead) which invites us to honor and reflect upon loved ones we have lost. An altar (ofrenda
)
will hold our mementos – for people or animals – by way of photos, letters, art, and other small tokens of remembrance.
We invite you and your students to join in this day of remembrance. Grades 5 and up will have a chance to visit the altar in the 7th grade classroom and admire it in full display. The early grades will not visit it during the school day but all families are welcome to leave items on the altar if they would like when the classroom is not in use.
Please make sure that all items are labeled with name and class, so they can be picked up/returned.

New Work by Carolee Jakes
A number of High School faculty have visited the Studio Gallery to see new work by our Printmaking Instructor, Carolee Jakes. On Friday, October 25, the senior class also made the pilgrimage and were pleased to recognize the distinctive style of their well-loved teacher. Recently reviewed in the Washington Post by Marc Jenkins, Carolee’s current show revolves around summer experiences with printmaking on the island of Skopelos, Greece. The work shown here,
Water: Theme and Variations, expresses her fascination with rhythmic, swirling line and color.
The twelfth grade also met with artist Langley Spurlock and poet John Martin Tarrat for a tour of their exhibit entitled
Secrets of the Elements 5 in the main gallery. This is the fifth and last exhibit focusing on the theme of the periodic table as expressed through Spurlock’s complex iconic imagery combined with Tarrat’s haiku poems. The pair have been working since 2004 to express the essence of all 118 elements in dynamic designs that capture the history, events and stories around each element.
Our seniors enjoyed the outing immensely and were newly impressed with the role artistic endeavor can have in an individual artist’s life and identity, and in communicating new ways of seeing old ideas and common themes. It was exciting to see how each artist awakened to their theme, creating work that, in turn, awakened fresh interest in our students.
Thanks to Gary Skoronski (Chemistry) and Gogi Kalka (Life Sciences) for taking the students downtown!

International Student Seeking a Portable Piano
Gergő is an international guest student from Hungary, who joined the WWS 10th Grade a few weeks ago and who will stay until December 22.
At home in Hungary, Gergő played the piano and practiced every day. It's really important to him so we are looking for a portable piano. In order to play the pieces he has learnt, he needs one with 88 fully weighted keys, a stand, and a single pedal. Looking to borrow or rent until he returns home in December.
Thank you in advance & best regards,
Balazs Tokar & Piroska Sipos
(Gergő's parents)
