Important Distance Learning Update

Since the Thanksgiving holiday break, we have seen a steady increase in positive cases of Covid-19 in both students and staff. To date we have had numerous students and staff infected in and outside of school settings and many more students and staff required to quarantine.

Based on our experiences in the Narragansett schools after Halloween and after Thanksgiving, we anticipate an increase in infection rates in the days following the Holiday break. We also are currently experiencing a steady increase in infections in our schools that may be rooted in the rate of spread in our local community.

Consequently, we plan to incorporate full district distance learning days immediately prior to and following the Holiday break to allow for current and potential infections to be identified and contained before bringing students back to in-person learning.

Our pre- and post-break schedule is detailed below:
  • December 21-23: Full distance learning for all students
  • December 24- January 3: Holiday break
  • January 4-8: Full distance learning for all students
  • January 11: Return to in-person learning

This temporary change constitutes a total of eight distance learning days, but allows for three weeks of separation and social distancing. This approach incorporates a 14-day period between Christmas and a return to school that is intended to prevent our students and staff members from becoming widely infected from the positive cases that may result from social and family gatherings or travel over the holiday.

Please continue to follow the recommendations of the Rhode Island Department of Health regarding limiting contact outside of your household, wearing masks, and staying home if there are any signs of illness or after potential exposure. Also, we ask that you keep your holiday gatherings small and local. Even with all of these precautions, we expect a significant spike in cases following the holidays and are taking a proactive approach so that we can resume and maintain in-person learning throughout the following weeks and months.
Thank you for Attending our First Virtual Open House!

Thank you to all who joined us at our first virtual open house on November 21st, 2020. We hope you enjoyed an inside look at our schools and our programs here in Narragansett.

Below is the full recording of the event as well as some helpful links and the full videos we premiered.

For further information on applying or exploring our school further, please connect with Joan Pratley from our Guidance Office.
Over the past year, so many of our dedicated employees have been working in and out of the classrooms to ensure the safety and wellness of our students and the entire school community.

This month, we would like to highlight two of the many employees who have done an amazing job in continuing the operational flow throughout the school year.

Bonnie Stromley
Bonnie has been with the district since 2012 as a substitute custodian. Her hard work and going the "extra mile" for our schools was noticed immediately and she was officially appointed in August 2017! Currently, Bonnie works at our High School and has done a tremendous job, especially ensuring all of our current cleaning guidelines are met! The maintenance department shared that they truly feel fortunate to have such a wonderful member on staff.

Rhonda Redden
Rhonda has been with our district since 1994. Not only has she served as a Bus Monitor, Bus Driver, Union Representative and worked within the Transportation Office Staff, she is also an expert trainer, contributing to dozens of successful drivers obtaining their CDLs and School Bus Certificates.
Although she has transported many different grades over the years, she has spent the past decade mainly transporting pre-k and special needs students.

Thank you both for your service within the Narragansett School System!
A Note from the Narragansett Prevention Partnership

Dear NSS Community,

As 2020 draws to a close, NPP encourages you to really take time to think about what matters most to you…

There is no denying that 2020 has been a difficult and complicated year that changed our lives in ways we couldn’t have imagined. As challenging as it has been, some positives came shining through. During this holiday season we can all try to stay positive by focusing our energy not on what was “lost” but on what we gained…”resilience”. Looking forward to 2021 with hope, we can reflect on the challenges we overcame, the connections we’ve kept in new ways, the different methods we’ve discovered to do things or how to make do without things, and the new family traditions we’ve created.

An incredible THANK YOU to our NES Families and Staff for your tremendous generosity this season, especially during last weekend's Fill the Trunk Coat and Donation Drive!

It was foggy and rainy but a special thanks goes out to Jen Sulivan, Nicole MacCoy the NES PTO, Brianne Mancuso, Jen Taliani, Mandy Baldwin and NHS students for their efforts, which resulted in helping boost our Hope for the Holidays donations to the Jonnycake Center with gift cards, books, toys, and coats! We were able to exceed expectations in gift cards alone, donating more than $500 in local business gift cards to help the local businesses. Final numbers of all the items donated will be shared with the school shortly.

Students Brighten the Day of Healthcare Workers

Students at the Pier School recently created beautiful cards that will be handed out to healthcare workers at South County Hospital.

A representative from the hospital has been working with the community and school to make this possible in an effort to lift the spirits of healthcare workers who are struggling with the heavy toll COVID-19 has been taking these past few weeks.

Students, both those learning in-person and distance learning, were able to provide 189 messages, which will be shared and passed out among healthcare workers who are on the front lines every day.

A big thank you to Stefanie Mezzanotte for helping lead this effort in the school!
