FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
Hello and happy Eleventy-hundred and seventeenth day of Covid-19 closure.

We are all doing fairly well here at the school end of things. Our leadership teams are figuring out Zoom and Teams and YouTube and Google Classroom and a host of other platforms for virtual connectivity.

Our teachers are, likewise, figuring out and implementing delivery of resources to students in this cyber-school world.

Thank you for your patience with our instructional staff as they learn how best to support students and to create a healthy academic dynamic for learning amid so much… much.

I have really learned that some curriculums transfer really well into a distance-learning paradigm, some staff persons have lifestyles that thrive in new and unstructured settings, and some students very much rise to a reliance on technology for learning.

And some just don’t.

(I spoke to one staff member earlier this week who was calling me from his car, parked in the Trader Joes lot while his wife bravely stood in line in the snow waiting for entry into the socially-distant, only 12 shoppers at a time situation there; he had three small kids in the car and was simultaneously trying to entertain them, talk to me, wave encouragingly at his frozen spouse now and then, and not kill the battery on his car while it was idling… I was amazed at his steadiness and good humor, but I was also wondering just how long he could keep this all up!)

Our schools are on spring break next week, and our teachers will be using the time to regroup and recharge as best as they can in their homes away from supports they’ve always had, and while juggling kids and Corona and angst and relationships…

Just. Like. You.

My daughter said to me yesterday, “You’re not working from home. You’re at home, trying to work in a crisis. It’s different.”

So thank you for the grace you are offering to me and to our staff as we all learn how to do this new work, and please give yourself some grace in the process, too.

All of this is hard and scary and frustrating and nutty.

As parents, you’re putting on your best, “We are okay and it’s going to all work out” face for your family and just that is exhausting.

Be as well and kind and together as you can, and when you can’t anymore, please go for a drive or a walk and get out of the intensity that is home right now.

We are clearly in this for a long haul – and like most burdens, we will all get better at bearing it.
I miss the old way of doing school, but am determined that this new way won’t get the better of me.

If you have landed on strategies that are helping you with mental wellness, student care, or life in general, let us know – we would love to learn and we can all get better together.

INFORMATION
Fall 2020 Schedules: Our draft Fall 2020 schedules are now available on PowerSchool for students to view. These schedules are in very early DRAFT form and we have 93% of students fully scheduled (we are working on this every day to get to 100%). The next step is to ensure that all students have the correct and desired classes by logging into PowerSchool to check that the right classes are assigned and that nothing has been missed (click on Next Year’s Schedule, then look at the Matrix view - works best on a computer, the app doesn't show next year's classes). Please read the information below on how scheduling and change requests will work :
  • If you don’t know how to get into PowerSchool, email theresam@spokaneschools.org.
  • If you have a hole in your schedule, that means you are one of the 7% that have scheduling issues. We are moving classes around to fix as many issues as possible. If we cannot find a solution, we will be emailing you directly to find a solution (the email will go to your MS365 account). This process will take time, so we thank you for your patience.
  • Your classes are confirmed, but the periods and teachers WILL change many times over the next few months. Sorry, but we cannot promise specific teachers or periods due to the fluidity of the schedule and very full classes. Please try to not get attached to a specific schedule because it will change every day (maybe even every hour).
  • If you signed up to be an Intern (Seniors only), we haven't assigned specific periods to that class yet. Over the next few weeks, you'll see it move into periods 1-6.
  • For errors or change requests: 1) if you need counselor support regarding the change, begin by emailing your counselor, or 2) if it is a straight forward change, you can email theresam@spokaneschools.org. You can see the changes reflected in PowerSchool once they are made. If a change cannot be made due to period conflicts or full classes, we will let you know.
  • MANY of our electives are full, which is why you may have been moved into an alternate elective that you entered into PowerSchool when you selected your classes in January. We cannot promise that we can get you into specific electives. If you were moved out of an elective that you need for graduation (ex. you are going to be a senior and you registered for CTE because you need the credit but you were moved into Art, please explain that in your request).
  • If you are a choice student from outside Spokane Public Schools, you will not be able to see your schedule online because you are considered "pre-registered" and there is a glitch that doesn't show your schedule. You can theresam@spokaneschools.org and a copy will be sent via email (but it will change many times).
  • If you are planning on taking SVL, please go online to register soon to ensure a spot at www.spokanevirtual.com. There may be some changes coming for SVL registration with the closure, when we know more, we will let you know. For now, SVL is listed on schedules as “pending”, in August, the real SVL courses will be merged into PowerSchool. If you no longer want to take the SVL class, email theresam@spokaneschools.org.
  • If you are planning on enrolling in Running Start at the college, please contact your counselor to begin the process. Once you have a confirmed schedule, it is important to let us know that we can drop your LC classes (we understand that this process might be delayed as well due to the colleges being closed for now).
AP Testing Updates from the College Board: Check your email that you used when you set up your AP account for updates directly from College Board. LC and your teachers will continue to send you AP Testing updates as well.

Exam Dates:
  • Exams will be given from May 11-22 as a take a 45-minute online exam at home
  • Makeup test dates will be available for each subject from June 1-5 (this is only if you cannot test on the original date - this must be arranged with Theresa Meyer ASAP at theresam@spokaneschools.org. Please note that College Board has very specific and limited reasons to allow late exams).
  • Students can take exams at home. If school reopens, the exam will be taken at LC
  • Each subject's exam will be taken on the same day at the same time, worldwide - View the full testing schedule

Exam Format:
  • Most exams will have one or two free-response questions, and each question will be timed separately. Students will need to write and submit their responses within the allotted time for each question.
  • Students will be able to take exams on any device they have access to - computer, tablet, or smartphone. They'll be able to type and upload their responses or write responses by hand and submit a photo via their cell phones. (SPS can provide laptops - fill out the form at: spokaneschools.org/LaptopCheckout)
  • For most subjects, the exams will be 45 minutes long, plus an additional 5 minutes for uploading. Students will need to access the online testing system 30 minutes early to get set up.
  • AP Photo and AP Studio Art will use portfolio submissions and will not have a separate online exam. All deadlines for these submissions have been extended to May 26, 2020, 11:59pm ET. Teachers and students may receive separate course-specific communications.
  • Students taking world language and culture exams will complete two spoken tasks consistent with free-response questions 3 and 4 on the current AP Exam. Written responses will not be required. We'll provide additional details in the coming weeks to help students prepare.
  • Tips for testing on specific devices will be available in late April.

Exam Scores and College Credit:
  • As usual, students' work will be scored by our network of college faculty and AP teachers, and will be reported on a 1–5 scale. We anticipate releasing scores as close to the usual July time frame as possible.
  • College Board has spoken with hundreds of institutions across the country that support our solution for this year's AP Exams.

Exam Security
  • Like many college-level exams, this year's AP Exams will be open book/open note. The exam format and questions are being designed specifically for an at-home administration, so points will not be earned from content that can be found in textbooks or online. However, students taking the exams may not consult with any other individuals during the testing period. College Board will take the necessary steps to protect the integrity of each exam administration, as we do every year.
  • For the small number of students who may try to gain an unfair advantage, College Board has a comprehensive and strict set of protocols in place to prevent and detect cheating. While some of these practices are confidential to maximize their effectiveness, students and education professionals can learn more about our security measures.
  • At a minimum, test takers should understand that those attempting to gain an unfair advantage will either be blocked from testing or their AP scores will be canceled, and their high school will be notified as will colleges or other organizations to which the student has already sent any College Board scores (including SAT scores). And they may be prohibited from taking a future Advanced Placement Exam as well as the SAT, SAT Subject Tests, or CLEP assessments.

Remote Instruction and Practice:
  • On March 25, College Board began offering free live AP review courses, delivered by AP teachers from across the country. The courses have been viewed more than 3.2 million times since they became available. On-demand lessons are now available for Art and Design.
  • In addition to sharing information about these classes with students, teachers who are providing remote instruction can use AP Classroom for most subjects. Additional tips for helping your students practice are available.

If you have any AP Testing Questions, please feel free to email Theresa Meyer at theresam@spokaneschools.org
Community Graduation Ceremony Updates:
  • The Spokane Native American Graduation event is cancelled for the safety of the community, and especially for the elders. • Lavender Graduation by the EWU Pride Center has been cancelled to prioritize the health and safety of the community. Tassels and stoles will be available for pick-up later in spring quarter. Sign up with the following link: https://inside.ewu.edu/pridecenter/lavendergraduation/

We know that there are many students who have potential for college success but often get overlooked for scholarship assistance. We also know that character and desire to improve play a large part in future success in school and life. Two scholarships for $1,000 are available from the 2020 LC Tiger Fund Scholarship fund. You can download the application here . Here are criteria for the scholarship selection:
  1. Applicants must be a LC Senior graduating in 2020.

  3. Must have had a personal life challenge/difficulty that they have overcome.

During this time, people can complete and submit an application to the first-round enrollment lottery, and make changes anytime through February 15. Learn more on the Spokane Schools Transfer page.

If your child currently attends LC on a choice transfer AND you live within the Spokane Public Schools boundary area, you do NOT need to reapply for next year to continue at LC.
