A Beautiful Day for an Oyster Roast!
It’s never easy to plan for an oyster roast here in the lowcountry, as winter weather can be a bit ... unpredictable. Will it be 80 degrees? Will it be 32 degrees? Sunny? Freezing rain?
As it turned out, January 23 was perfect oyster roast weather for our young adults: sunny and just the right kind of cold (jackets required but gloves and scarves unnecessary). “Perfect for warm chili, hot oysters, and hot dogs!” said the Rev. Justin Hare, St. Philip’s Assistant for Young Adult and College Ministry.
The oyster roast was an opportunity for our young adults to relax, spend some time together, and hear about opportunities to grow in their faith and get more connected with our church family. “While the food and the atmosphere were great, the company was what stood out to me,” Justin said, adding that one of the highlights of the afternoon was the live music courtesy of St. Philip’s own Cole Davis and his friend Mike Evanko, who together make up the band Swamp Fox. The attendees were treated to another musical surprise when Justin picked up a guitar and joined Swamp Fox on a couple of songs, including a cover of “One” by U2. “Who knew Justin was such an able guitarist?” said the Rev. Brian McGreevy.
"God provided great weather and fantastic music to celebrate the good things in life," said Zippy Hood, who attended with her husband, Billy. "We are grateful that our church family and the clergy of St. Philip's provide these sweet opportunities to walk the path of life together with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ."
If you’re a young adult in the Charleston area who has not yet connected with Justin and the rest of the 20-30-somethings of our church, take a minute to reach out to Justin now at (843) 478-3443 or jhare@stphilipschurchsc.org! He’d love to meet you over coffee or have a quick conversation over the phone and catch you up on all we’ve got going on. And if you don’t fall into that age group and you’re wondering when your oyster roast is, it’s on March 20!

“For Freedom, Christ Has Set Us Free ...”
by Martha Vetter, World Missions Committee
Ishmael rejoiced in his newfound love for Christ, but he also wrestled with memories of a terrible crime he had committed twenty-five years earlier.
A special thanks to our church family for your ongoing prayers on behalf of the Dufatanye Organization (DO) in Nyanza, Rwanda. Many of you know that the DO is a non-government organization (NGO) that surrounds a farm of ten hectares and provides a Christ-centered community for hundreds of desperately scarred victims of genocide, AIDS, and extreme poverty in Rwanda.
The DO provides a safe haven and empowers this community by cultivating a spirit of reconciliation among those who formerly eyed one another with terrific enmity. The term dufatanye means to “join and cooperate together.” Just as Christ called His people to be one in spirit and truth, we endeavor to build a peace-filled community with our members and in the surrounding areas.
We have recently extended our ministry to reach five of the most vulnerable communities within an hour’s drive from the DO. These people live deep in the bush or forest regions. We call them Villages of Hope because we provide tangible forms of supportive activities that strengthen and encourage them in body, soul, and spirit. These include teaching Bible; building kitchen gardens; planting banana, mango and avocado trees; providing water filters/buckets; building school playgrounds; leading classes in health education; donating clothes and shoes to children; and providing mosquito nets and mattresses for mothers and grandmothers. Though many of our goals are centered on building integrity and sustainability through personal and communal industry, we always strive to emphasize biblical truths that cultivate humility, purity of heart, and a forgiving posture.

Fervent: A Women’s Study of Prayer
Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m in the Parish Hall ~ February 8–March 15
Leaders: Margaret Donaldson and Charlotte Williams
Does your prayer life need a boost? Join Margaret
and Charlotte as we embark on a 6-week study of
the Priscilla Shirer book Fervent. We will take a
hard look at what the enemy wants us to believe
about ourselves, our families, our identities, our
relationships, our pasts, and our fears. By studying
what the Bible tells us about the power of prayer
and the Father to whom we pray for all things, we
will form a battle plan for serious prayer.
Bring your Bible and a notebook to our first meeting
on February 8 at 9:00 in the Parish Hall. We will
have your books for you.

This Week's Service Information
The Rev. Jeffrey S. Miller will be preaching this Sunday at our services of Holy Communion at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m.
While you were taking stock of pantry staples last weekend in preparation for potentially hazardous winter weather, did your mind wander back to January 2018, when the lowcountry was quieted by a beautiful blanket of snow?
If you're relatively new to St. Philip's, you may have missed this lovely picture––snapped by Jim Stelling on January 3, 2018––the first time it made the rounds. But if you follow St. Philip's on Facebook and/or Instagram, you probably saw it when we posted it to our story last week. But if this is your first time seeing this picture since 2018 or EVER, then it sounds like you need to give us a follow right now!
