Library Instruction for Spring 2021
The Library is currently accepting requests for Spring 2021 instruction! Even if you haven’t solidified your plans, it’s not too early to get in touch to discuss ways our librarians can help you and your students. All Library instruction continues to be offered online in both synchronous and asynchronous formats, including our Embedded Librarian program that pairs a librarian with your course. In Fall 2020, we provided instructional support on topics such as developing a research question, using specific research tools, evaluating information, understanding plagiarism, creating an annotated bibliography, and much more!

Spring 2021 Orientation Week will take place January 12 - January 15. The schedule is coming soon and will be available on the Harper Intranet Portal (HIP).
Tenured, full-time faculty who have attained a minimum of one promotion as a Harper faculty member are invited to apply for the Faculty Director position. After a lifetime of studying meditative martial arts, Dr. Josh Sunderbruch would like to offer a few ways that mindset and staying centered can help during stressful times. An introductory session will be offered on December 10 followed by four sessions during the Spring 2021 semester.
In addition to teaching, Harper's studio art faculty are dedicated to making and exhibiting their own work. This biennial exhibition featuring works by 17 of our art faculty members provides an important opportunity for them to share their work with students, colleagues, and the community. Try Argument Mapping! Improving Students' Critical Thinking Skills

As part of its ongoing work to improve the results of the General Education Critical Thinking Assessment, the Learning Assessment Committee’s General Education-Critical Thinking Work Group designed a two-part workshop on argument mapping. The first of the two sessions, held virtually on October 30, was facilitated by Dr. Dona Warren, Director of the Critical Thinking Center at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. Nearly two-dozen Harper faculty members and administrators attended the first workshop, which focused on the fundamentals of argument mapping both as a tool for analyzing existing arguments and creating one’s own arguments.

Free Access to Virtual Conference Recordings! 2021 Call for Proposals

The Assessment Institute is the oldest and largest higher education event in the United States focused on assessment and improvement. Since the October 2020 conference was held virtually this year, all sessions were recorded and are now available.
The annual conference is hosted by Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). It is designed to provide opportunities for individuals and campus teams to share and extend their knowledge and skills in assessment. The conference is also a means to establish networks that serve as sources of support and expertise beyond the dates of the Institute. Are you interested in getting involved? Do you have success stories to share?

Meet Edward Hamel
Edward Hamel, music instructor, is the newest Diverse Faculty Fellow to join Harper. He is also an accomplished composer as well as a mastering and mixing engineer with his own record label, SCRIPTS Records. Edward believes community college is a great place to help students who are still figuring things out and want to learn about all of the options available in the music world. Music, as academic or complex as it can be, should be accessible to anyone and everyone. “There is a stigma in the academic music world that you are almost born into it. If you are not playing an orchestral instrument by the time you are five years old, you are already behind,” said Edward
Ed's record label SCRIPTS just released a compilation album of new electronic pieces from composers/artists around the nation. All sales will be donated to My Block, My Hood, My City - a nonprofit organization in Chicago doing beautiful things and important work for the underprivileged youth.
