Good Afternoon RCS Parents & Guardians,
Redwood Christian Schools Response to CA Gov. Newsom's Announcement

RCS continues to monitor all communication from federal, state, and local authorities. The safety of our students, staff, and teachers is one of our primary concerns. Earlier this week, Governor Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Thurmond suggested that California schools will remain closed through the end of the school year because of COVID-19. They based their decision about what is best for the health and safety of students, staff, and teachers and the need for continued social distancing.

RCS is planning for Online Distance Learning to continue through the end of the school year. However, it is RCS’ desire to be ready to pivot and have students return to campus before the end of the year, if this were to become possible. Such a pivot would require all shelter-at-home orders, social distancing requirements, group-size limitations to be lifted, and the Alameda County Public Health Officer stating that it is safe for students, staff, and teachers to return to school campuses.

What about _____ ?!?

We know that this announcement raises many questions. What will be the last day of instruction? Will there be high school finals? Will there be graduations? Will there be end-of-year awards? How will textbooks and iPads be checked back in? When will lockers be cleaned out? What does this mean for Summer REC? Etc...

These questions will all be answered in the next few weeks as we learn what is and is not permissible based upon the current shelter-at-home order. We do not want to react and announce decisions right now while there is still plenty of time to monitor what is happening. We want to respond with a fully informed decision.   We are going to work hard over the next two weeks to answer these questions and more, looking to provide the best possible outcomes for the entire RCS TK-12th family.

We want to acknowledge the tremendous effort that all RCS parents are putting in during Online Distance Learning. You are doing an amazing job partnering with RCS teachers to facilitate the lessons and curriculum in your homes.

We also want to acknowledge the massive endeavor that every single RCS teacher has taken on. They are providing their rigorous curriculum in a new way. They are working hard to ensure that students receive the content and skills necessary to be ready for the start of next school year and instructions that make these learning objectives clear to both students and parents. Please take a moment to drop your teachers a note of support and appreciation for everything that they are doing.

We also want to acknowledge our graduating seniors. The fourth quarter of senior year is what is often looked forward to as the best time of the TK-12 academic career. We know how much RCS seniors were looking forward to Senior Chapel, Senior Tea, Senior Trip, and Graduation, and we are committed to finding the best possible ways to honor them before they head off to college!  #RCSclassof2020

All of us are living in a new reality. It is hard on us as adults, and I believe that it is just as hard (if not more) on our students. They miss their friends, they miss leaving the house, they miss their activities, and they are concerned for the health of their friends and family. RCS is fully invested to ensure the academic success of our students and to assist parents with the social and emotional well-being of their children, and we thank you for your partnership.

In Christ,

Al Hearne II, PhD
Superintendent
