Ms. Mezza Wins Golden Apple

Ms. Cecelia Mezza
Diocese of Harrisburg
Golden Apple Recipient

Quick Links

The Diocese of Harrisburg recently honored York Catholic music teacher, Cecelia Mezza, with the 2020 Golden Apple Award. The highest recognition given by the Diocese to a teacher, this honor commends the educator's professional excellence, leadership, commitment to Catholic values, and devotion to teaching in a Catholic school.

Mezza has been teaching music to 7th through 12th grade students at York Catholic for nine years. She is the chair of the Fine Arts Department and is also the Marching Band Director, Musical Pit Director, Jazz Band Director, and Jazz Ensemble Director. She received her Bachelor's degree from Notre Dame of Maryland University, and her Masters of Music from Colorado State University.  She also received additional educational certifications from Old Dominion University, Devry University, and The University of the Arts.

When she is not teaching students through classes, extra-curricular music clubs, and community events, she plays violin in the York College Community Orchestra, cantors for St. Mary's Church, and is a member of the St. Mary's Church Choir.

Mezza said she was inspired to become an educator during high school by teachers who "taught me that I had strengths and how to use them to work through my weaknesses."  She said, "as Catholic school teachers, we have the opportunity to give students the support, care and love they need to get through the day and the faith they need to get through their lives."  Recognizing the challenges the coronavirus has presented to teachers and students, Mezza said, "teachers are holding online office hours and classes to connect with and see their students face-to-face on a computer screen.  We quite simply miss our students and worry about their well being.  We refuse to give up the thing we love most about our school, the community and family which makes us York Catholic."

Mezza was nominated for the award by the Danczyk family.  She will be presented with the Golden Apple Award by the Diocese of Harrisburg at a ceremony scheduled after the stay-at-home order has been lifted

Senior Scholarships
All Seniors are asked to email all of their acceptance letters and scholarship award letters to Ms. Dill at [email protected] by Friday, April 24, for inclusion in the graduation booklet.  We will make a copy for you and you can keep the original.  This information is also used for our school statistics.  We will honor their accomplishments by acknowledging the acceptances and scholarships at various functions and celebrations at the end of the school year.  We are proud of our seniors!
Virtual Congratulatons for Seniors
Typically the National Honor Society holds a carnation sale at the end of the school year for students and family members to send congratulatory carnations to the graduating seniors.  This year the NHS is sponsoring a Virtual Congratulations for our Seniors. Although we cannot purchase or deliver carnations at this time, it's the "Congratulations!" messages that make this tradition so special for our graduating seniors. Just fill in the form by clicking here.  Orders are FREE and due by Friday, May 1, at 3 PM.  We'll take care of the rest in making sure the senior receives the message and your congratulatory support.
Senior Graduate Signs

Class of 2020, a local sign company has partnered with parents to create a special yard sign to congratulate seniors. If you are interested in ordering, please contact Jennifer at Image 360 York: [email protected]  The cost of each sign is $26.50.   This is not a school-sponsored activity or requirement.
Marching Band Auditions
Any student who is registered for the 2020-2021 school year at York Catholic, is a musician, dancer, or interested in color guard, should sign up for Marching Band!  The seriousness of COVID-19 prevents us from holding auditions in person this year, so we've made adjustments to allow for auditions through recordings and still maintain our rehearsal schedule.

YC students who are instrumentalists need to play at least at an intermediate level.  Students who are new to York Catholic need to send an audition recording.  The audition recording must include the student playing two different scales of their choice and a selection from a private lesson piece or concert piece.

New YC students who wish to join the color guard must audition.  Auditions will take place when we can all be back together.

Click here for sign-up for Marching Band and Color Guard and for more details about auditions. The deadline for submitting audition videos is Friday, May 22
