Hello,

Every young adult should have the opportunity to envision and pursue a positive future. That's why your Y is dedicated to providing outreach to teens, with programs and activities that build self-esteem, encourage leadership roles, and connect teens with positive role models. We know that our youth have bright futures ahead and we want to help along the way.

Teens today can be under a lot of stress and that is why mindfulness can be such a powerful skill to help combat it. On October 16, Y Instructors Matt Kane and Sarah Finney helped lead
a Stress Reduction and Relaxation Techniques session at South Eugene High School's Junior/Senior Workshops. This was a part of students' college preparation day--with sessions focused on the future. Matt and Sarah's stress reduction workshop served as an opportunity for students to get moving and meditate during what can be a stressful time in their lives.

Aside from learning how to relax, it's also important for teens to be able to have fun in a positive and safe environment. Having a safe space to be active and form friendships can make a big difference for youth. It's why we are proud that this fall your Y is showcasing a Teen Night for middle schoolers. With sports, games and other fun activities, teens can take over the Y for a night and enjoy this time to hang out with one another.

Membership Reminders
Membership Rate Increase
Cost should never be a barrier to wellness. Your Y is committed to being approachable and affordable to all. That is why our membership rate has not increased for the past three years. To further the growth of our facilities and services that support our community, your Y will be increasing membership rates effective Jan. 1, 2020. This increase will help the Y keep up with the rising cost of physical improvements to our building and support changes to the living wage in Oregon. We will continue to offer financial assistance to those who need it.

Join Brian Steffen for Coffee with the CEO on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 11 a.m. This is a chance for members to learn more about the rate changes and ask questions.

Insurance paying your membership? Read this...
For those members who receive the benefit of having a third-party payer (insurance) pay for your membership dues--we want to remind you that we will need you to stop by the Welcome Center and verify your insurance and fitness ID number with us for the 2020 billing cycle. Whether your insurance information stays the same or has changed we need to have you verify with us by 1/31/2020 for billing purposes. Thank you in advance.

Winter Basketball
Winter Basketball Registration
Being on a team is a great way for youth to learn sportsmanship, build self-esteem and grow athletic skills. Youth sports programs provide an opportunity for kids to have quality playing time and have fun. Your Y offers a competitive youth basketball league for the winter season. Practices begin on December 9 and the 8-game season will be played on Saturdays, running from January until March in Eugene and Springfield schools.

The registration deadline is Nov. 15 for 1st - 5th grades. Register here.

Winter Basketball: Hiring for Refs and Scorekeepers
Furthering youth development through sports would not be possible without our incredible community members who serve as refs and scorekeepers for games. We value the contributions that these people make for sports programs to run smoothly.

Hiring for refs and scorekeepers for our Winter Basketball season is happening now! E-mail [email protected].

Stone Soup Lunch
Stone Soup, the European folk story about townspeople sharing a tiny bit of food to make a meal that everyone enjoys, teaches the values of sharing and community. What better way to demonstrate these values than having Y preschoolers make their own Stone Soup! The special fall celebration allows Y families to share a meal with their preschoolers.

'Reaching Our Potential' Viewing Party
Join us on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3, in the Y lobby as we celebrate the Y's impact in our community.

Daisy Pressley knows youth development staff loves her children like they are their own and Pete Knox embraces the sense of community here. Your Y in the News
Cottage Grove Sentinel
Your Y has brought its afterschool enrichment program to Harrison Elementary School this year, reaching out into an area that has a high need from working parents. " The YMCA is about keeping kids physically active and mentally engaged in creative and fun activities and I love watching the kids do that every day after school," said Rachel Jackson, associate youth director at the Y. The program runs from the end of school until 6 p.m., providing snacks, space for games, arts and crafts, opportunities for physical activity, STEM activities and homework assistance for the children. The Cottage Grove community has shown a lot of support for the program due to a positive impact on its youth. Read the article: click here.

Eugene Weekly
There's no better place to improve your wellness than the great outdoors, but the Y is a close second! Your Y is honored to have placed second as Best Place to Get Fit in Eugene Weekly's "Best of Eugene" contest. Our yoga, aquatics and aerobic classes as well as our gym and Health and Wellness center are designed to improve wellness. We also host a variety of sports programs for our youth and have wellness coaches to help members achieve their individual wellness goals. Thank you for choosing us as a place to take a positive step in the direction of health and wellness!

Thank you OCCU Volunteers!
Your Y appreciates all of the community members and businesses that support us! We want to give a big thank you to the eight Oregon Community Credit Union (OCCU) employees for volunteering to paint the Beck Center and women's locker room for their annual Day of Service. The group came in and helped finish the project quickly and efficiently. We are so grateful for all of their help!

Y Staff as Lifelong Learners
Youth Development Training

Y Staff learned about fixed vs. growth
mindsets and social-emotional learning.
Your Y's Youth Development staff is committed to understanding the best ways to support youth on their journey to adulthood. Professional trainings throughout the year provide invaluable insight from educational leaders.

Y Youth Development staff recently attended the OregonASK Expanded Learning Partnership one-day conference focused on improving the quality of out-of-school programs across the state. OregonASK's mission is to inspire learning, keep kids safe, help working families and support whole-child development and wellness. OregonASK equipped the Y with training regarding structured, educational, and enrichment opportunities for students.

Protecting our community's youth is the fundamental role of Y staff. All Y staff members are mandatory child abuse reporters 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They all receive training to that end. Youth Development Director Holly Kriz-Anderson and other key youth development staff receive more in-depth training from organizations such as 90by30, which aims to reduce child abuse by 90 percent by 2030.

CPR/First Aid Training
In order for your Y to ensure that all individuals feel welcome and safe, we focus on staff-wide safety trainings. We are happy to announce that all Eugene YMCA staff are CPR and First Aid certified. This will further ensure that our members can continue to develop to their full potential in a safe environment.

Maintaining an Old Facility
You may have noticed all of the work going on around the Y facility. We've filled in potholes in the gravel alley behind the building, peeled off old paint and repainted areas in the front, replaced old lighting in the Health and Wellness Center and repainted parking spots to highlight handicapped parking in our lot and YMCA parking in South Eugene High School's lot.

Pool staff is also testing new mats for the pool deck and locker rooms to find a good solution to prevent slipping and keep the areas sanitary.

Your Y is very aware that our building is old and in a state of structural decline--but we are doing our best to maintain it and offer our members a pleasant experience until we move into a new one.

There are so many ways to give!
Your enthusiasm and support for our new Y project and the services and programs we provide is contagious! More than 240 donors--half of whom are new donors--have contributed $269,105 toward the Betty Soreng $500,000 challenge gift through the Oregon Community Foundation for a new Y. Thank you for your generous support!

If you're planning on making charitable contributions as we reach the end of the year, please consider your Y and make a contribution to either our Capital Campaign in support of the Betty Soreng challenge match or to our Annual Campaign in support of our financial assistance program ensuring that no one gets turned away from programs or services due to financial barriers.
Please visit  click here to learn more or designate a gift to the Capital Campaign, Annual Campaign or both!

Y Kudos
Your Y's own Kim Miller, Director of Health & Wellness and Healthy Living, has been named one of the 20 under 40 winners by the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce. Kim's dedication and commitment to the Y values and the wellness of the community earned her this prestigious honor. Congratulations, Kim. You are an inspiration to so many!
