“Tempe”
Dr. Gcina Mhlophe
February 27, 2022
Dr. Gcina Mhlophe from South Africa brought down the house at UUCSC with her daughter, Kwame Becker and our RIBS Val Tutson in January 2020. Influenced by her grandmother’s tales when she was a child, she performs around the world as an author, poet, playwright, director, performer and storyteller. Dr. Mhlophe returns to UUCSC, in recorded form, to tell a tale of hope and connection to others. The story is called “Tempe,” the name of a young African boy, who finally learns from a wise elder to use his own gift to bring pride to his community.

Our 8 Principles
Last Sunday Bethany led a discussion of our 1st Principle: "Respect the worth and dignity of every person." They talked about this thing called Respect.
Our 2nd Principle in kid language is "offer fairness and compassion to one another."
We will do a wonderful expressive arts activity about identifying what is not fair in our world.
Check out the 2 minute video above for a sweet reminder of kindness.
We will also jump on the Zoom call for our service to listen to the guest story-teller!

Have you mailed back your pledge card or dropped it in the box at UUCSC?
It feels so good to be generous, especially when supporting something you truly care about. It also feels good to have an important task completed. If you have a chance to check the bulletin board in the Oneto Room you can see how many people have returned their pledge cards and how close we are to the pledge total of $200,000.
Thank you for showing your love!

February is not my favorite month but it has been such an odd winter. Snowstorms and cold weather have been interspersed with days reaching 50 and even 60 degrees. I managed to take a good long bike ride between snowy days. I hope you are all managing to take advantage of whatever each day brings.
Good News
You may have already heard this news last Sunday but it is worth repeating...
The Board of Directors and Rev. Denis agreed that his ministry here with us is going well and we have committed to another year, through July 2023. This is great news! We can now concentrate on strengthening our congregation and moving forward, knowing Rev. Denis will be working right alongside us, sharing his enthusiasm, his energy and his experience. And of course, offering his thought-provoking sermons and spiritual guidance.
Sunday Services—What do you think?
Our three-week experiment with two Sunday services (one in-person, one online) went really well and enabled everyone to participate, even those who were out of state. So we have decided to continue to offer two services for three weeks in March. March 6, 13 and 20 will be offered in-person at 10am and then online at 11:30am, followed by a spiritual reflection at noon. But we want to know what YOU think. Please reach out to anyone on the Board or to Rev. Denis and tell us what works for you; are you able to attend either of these services? Do you have any suggestions for improvement? And what changes would you like to see as we move into spring?

Our short excursion took us to a delightful destination in historic Smith Hill. Welcomed and served by a friendly staff, including Chef Phyllis, we enjoyed a nice Ruffino Pinot, a Beet and Arugula salad, followed by "Naw-Leans" BBQ Shrimp and Grits, which proved more than satisfying. We must return to try other interesting menu items and the garden seating in the back! Off street parking was convenient. MORE REVIEWS.

Join the URI Center for the Humanities at 7:00 pm EST for this virtual panel featuring guest speakers Victoria Johnson, James DeWolf Perry, and Charles Roberts. In recent decades Rhode Islanders have come to terms with the history of slavery in Rhode Island, which was a center of the transatlantic slave trade. Newport, Providence, Bristol, and Warren were all destinations in the middle passage, and enslaved people worked in the plantations of Washington County where URI is located. This panel brings together representatives from three local organizations that are working to commemorate and raise awareness of this history: the Newport Middle Passage Ceremony and Port Marker Project; Rhode Island Slave History Medallions; and the Center for Reconciliation.

Giving and Receiving Love!
We had so many offers of love during both services on February 13!
We still have many available: offers of homemade food, rides, walks, phone calls, stand-up comedy jokes, coffee dates, borrowing tools and more! These lovely gifts can't be given without someone to receive them.
So please email Lee at uucscdre2@gmail.com to receive!
