You crown the year with Your goodness,
And Your paths drip with abundance.

Dear York Catholic Families,

I hope you have had a wonderful Christmas break with your family during this past week.

We are looking forward to returning to school on Monday, January 4.  Several families who had been virtual during December have already indicated their intentions of returning to in-person learning on Monday, January 4.  As such, we have noted those students in our schedule and are looking forward to their return.  If your student(s) originally intended to return on Monday, January 4, and/or wishes to extend/move to virtual through the end of second quarter (Friday, January 15, 2020), please contact Mrs. Kathy Hand at [email protected] by Friday, January 1. Please be advised that any inquiries past January 1 will take 24 business hours to transition a student from in-person to virtual learning.

Please remember and adhere to the words written by  Diocesan Superintendent Dan Breen prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, "If you want our schools to remain open for in-person instruction -- and you have told us that you do -- we need your continued cooperation and vigilance, and we ask you to remember that our Catholic school communities require each of us to consider the greater good, and that greater good does not end at school dismissal time."

WE NEED EVERYONE, ALL YORK CATHOLIC COMMUNITY MEMBERS, TO DO THEIR PART TO KEEP OUR SCHOOL SAFE.

As such, please be mindful of the required policies and procedures regarding COVID-19 reporting protocols and Student Travel during the holiday seasons.  Most importantly, please remember families are obligated to inform the school nurse at [email protected] if a household member of a student or the student him or herself is tested for COVID-19, and/or if any of those individuals test positive for COVID-19.  Also, families who travel during this time of a world COVID-19 pandemic are obligated to inform the school of their travel dates and destination at [email protected].

FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY, WE NEED OUR FAMILIES TO BE FORTHRIGHT AND HONEST IN THIS REGARD AS IT IS OUR CIVIC AND MORAL DUTY.

For those who do have a household member or themselves tested, or who cannot avoid the obligation to travel, we are happy to accommodate the consequential mandated period of quarantine (currently 10 days) through our virtual instruction model.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation during this time and have a very Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Katie Seufert '96
Principal

From the Reopening, Health & Safety Plan
Section LP 21 - Communication and Quarantine

When informed an immediate household member has been tested, the student or staff who resides in the same home will quarantine until the result of the test is confirmed negative. If the result of the immediate household member's test is positive, the student or staff member who resides in the same home will quarantine for 10 days.

Students or staff who may have been exposed to anyone with COVID-19 are required to quarantine for 10 days, even if the student or staff tests negative or feels healthy since symptoms may appear 2 to 10 days after exposure to the virus. Please see the latest criteria from the Centers for Disease Control on "exposure" and "quarantine."

Please be reminded, if a student tests positive for COVID-19, families are obligated to inform the school for the health and safety of the entire school community. This applies even when we are not in person or in session. Please email the school nurse at [email protected].

School staff and school community members will abide by the Diocese of Harrisburg requirement on quarantine for travelers to other states.  Any school staff or students traveling outside of PA are required to quarantine for 10 days. Likewise, any school staff or students entering the US from abroad (international travel) are required to quarantine for 10 days. Since international travel includes a wide range of situations, those affected bring their individual circumstances to the principal who will consult with the Secretary for Education to make a final determination.

This applies to those who have traveled outside of Pennsylvania. It does not apply to household members who did not travel out of state. However, if the individual who is under quarantine develops any signs or symptoms or has a positive test result, their close contacts, including household members, should also quarantine.

Anyone student or staff member who is required to quarantine must notify the following:

York Catholic Fund
York Catholic has continued to offer our students a competitive, top notch education for over 90 years. This education extends outside of academics; YC students are encouraged to form habits of service to live out their faith in their everyday lives. While students are only required to complete minimal service hours (12-16 hours depending on their grade), many students volunteer beyond this. The Class of 2020 completed over 15,000 hours of community service!

On this last day of 2020, we turn to our generous alumni, parents, and community friends like yourselves and ask you to prayerfully consider YC as a charity of choice for your year-end gifts to our York Catholic Fund.

The YC Fund goal this year is $300,000, which we hope to achieve by June 30, 2021. These funds not only support every student by enriching extra-curricular programs, music, and the arts, but also provides professional development for teachers, academic program support, athletic programs, technology, special projects, and covers operating expenditures.

Every gift, whatever the amount, counts and is truly valued. Please use the return envelope included in your December issue of Greensleeves or click the Make a Difference DONATE button below to use our online donation page.

As always, thank you for your continued support of YC!

Capital Campaign Phase II Kicks Off
We have officially kicked off the fundraising for Phase II of our Capital Campaign.  Phase II includes renovating the York Catholic Middle School, formerly the Brady Science Hall, and addressing additional campus improvements including upgrading the infrastructure, repaving the parking lot, installing new stadium grandstands, relocating the Grotto, and adding a beautiful Rosary Walk. The cost of Phase II is $4 million. The great news is that more than half of that has already been raised by an anonymous donor. Let's show our Irish pride and collectively contribute the remainder needed.

We thank Patrick and Mondi Sterling for chairing the Parent Appeal for the campaign and we remind you of their words of support:

"For our family, York Catholic is a special place. We settled in York in 2007. We have ten children and five have already graduated from York Catholic...only five more to go! We have lived in New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and even spent time in Mali in West Africa. It was not until we found St. Joseph's and York Catholic, that we found our home. It was the church and school community that made this such a special place. We have no doubts that the money we spend sending our children to York Catholic is the best money we have ever spent. It has given back much more than we put in. We hope you feel the same way about this family oriented and faith-based school."

Inclement Weather
During inclement weather that would cause a school closing or delay of schedule, York Catholic will call/text/email you through our One Call Now Emergency Notification system.  Other modes of notification include WGAL TV-8, Fox43, and the YC website.  Students from individual school districts are automatically excused if their district closes and does not provide transportation to YCHS.  The exceptions to this are Southern and Southeastern.  These students follow York Catholic's delay and closing schedule.
