JBG Smith Cares - A Hero's at Home Project
|
Earlier this month, RTMC partnered with JBG Smith and Sears to work on our annual Hero's at Home Project. JBG Smith employee's came out on a beautiful September morning to work on the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cox.
Mr. Cox, is an army veteran, having served during World War II. He and his wife are now elderly and are both in declining health. Because of this, they were not able to complete critical repairs in their home. With their children's help, they reached out to RTMC to ask for help in making repairs so they could continue to live in their home and age in place. The support provided from JBG Smith and Sears allowed for the home to be transformed by resolving the Cox's plumbing issues, fixing their roof, providing repairs to the interior walls of the home, fixing door frames and steps, and cleaning up the exterior of their home. The Cox's children joined the JBG Smith volunteers on the day of service to assist in making these repairs. With the repairs complete, Mr. and Mrs. Cox, and their children, are able to rest easy knowing that their home is a safe, dependable space for them to age in place.

Disasters Don't Plan Ahead. You Can!
|
The past couple of weeks have been disastrous for the South, with Hurricane Harvey causing mass destruction throughout Texas, and Hurricane Irma devastating the lives of many throughout Florida and the surrounding regions. Fortunately, many people were able to evacuate to safety as a result of having an emergency plan. Do you and your family have an emergency plan? What will you do if there is a storm that causes power or water loss? How will you manage a blizzard? Where will you meet in the case of a fire?
Unfortunately, incidents like this occur. Creating a family disaster plan can help prepare you for these times of distress. Here are three steps you can take to create an emergency plan.
- With your family or household members, discuss how to prepare and respond to the types of emergencies that are most likely to happen where you live, learn, work and play.
-
Identify responsibilities for each member of your household and how you will work together as a team.
- Practice as many elements of your plan as possible.
