leaders in four categories: sustainability, environmental project, land conservation, and implementation of the Virginia Outdoors Plan. The awards are given to businesses and industrial facilities, not-for-profit organizations, and government agencies. FOLAR is so proud to partner with the City staff and many donors who made the first phase of the Hopewell Riverwalk so successful. We continue to work together to extend the Riverwalk so that it connects to the Hopewell Marina and the developing 25-mile Appomattox River Trail.
Now more than ever our community needs greenways and blueways for exercise, recreation, and transportation while connecting with nature to deal with the stress and fear of the pandemic.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR TWO SEPT ACTIVITIES
 21ST Annual James River Regional Clean-up - A Self-Directed Year
September 12, 2020
FOLAR is joining the James River Advisory Council in its 21ST year of cleaning up the James River and Tributaries shorelines! The cleanup is a cooperative, regional event spanning more than 75 miles of the James River at a number of sites. On the Appomattox River, Petersburg Patton Park will be a "Self-Directed" site. Volunteers will bring their own bags and clean trash from the Park and shoreline area - sending selfies of their great work! Volunteers will also have an opportunity to work with FOLAR volunteers to clean up around the historic mill arches further west along the Trail in Petersburg. Please inquire about mill clean-up at [email protected]. At the Hopewell City Marina you have an opportunity to go out on a guided kayak route to clean-up. Spaces are limited so register right away!

Fall FOLAR Trail Counts
 September 24 and 26
10:00am - 12 noon or 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Twice each year FOLAR organizes counts of pedestrian and bike use at key access points of the Appomattox River Trail. We missed the Spring counts due to the pandemic so it's really important that we get good counts this month. That's where you can help! Volunteers are needed for counting on Thursday, September 24th and Saturday, September 26th between 10am-12pm or 4pm-6pm. Counts provide valuable data used to improve and inform pedestrian and bike infrastructure planning and design. Our thanks to PHOPS for their support of this effort.  Project Kickoff in Petersburg
FOLAR and the City of Petersburg are working together to improve a section of Appomattox River Trails and Trailhead near Virginia State University.
Project objectives include:
1. ADA accessible path for all pedestrians and bicyclists, including wheelchairs
2. Improve trail condition to prevent further erosion
and address runoff into the river
3. Respect the history and location of the site
5. Preserve existing native vegetation
6. Accommodate wayfaring signage
The project is made possible through entirely private funding to FOLAR including a challenge grant from The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation, The Cameron Foundation, and many giving community members and business who made challenge grant donations. Stay tuned for project schedule, updates, and progress. Pictured at right, the review team walks the project trail area.
