On Friday, March 13, Delaware’s citizens learned that on the following Monday school buildings would be closed at least until March 30. Ten days later, the closure was extended to May 15. On March 24, the announcement came that school buildings would be closed for the rest of the school year.
With two days of lead time, Delaware’s education professionals figured out a lot of things, such as:
• how to get meals to students
• how to deep-clean buildings in the hope that schools would be able to open sooner rather than later
• what physical materials their students would need
• ways to distribute tablets and laptops to students
• where they could create hotspots so students could have internet access.

Teachers, the people who deliver the real goods of education, figured out where in their homes they could set up virtual school rooms and scrambled to get the equipment they needed to do so. They created plans for teaching online and created packets for students who didn’t have access to the internet. They started – and continued – working even more hours than the many hours they already devoted to their craft and their kids.
Many teachers needed to discover how to use virtual platforms to deliver lessons and what kinds of materials they could use or create for the students they couldn’t reach that way. The learning curve for teachers, parents, and students has been steep and rocky. Some had tools to succeed better than others. Regardless of the level of success, their efforts have been heroic.
We also gratefully recognize and acknowledge our partners and sponsors. Our deepest thanks go to our supporters for the many contributions and responsive efforts during COVID-19, and for being champions of the DFSME mission and vision.

Teachers, Your Voice Matters - Help Us Help You
The entire country has many lessons to absorb and react to –
both from the obstacles to the successes themselves.
At DFSME, we would like Delaware teachers to help us acquire the data we need in order to help create appropriate policies in Delaware for moving forward. We advocate for the kinds of professional learning and materials that will ensure that every teacher can meet the challenges of the coming school year, in both physical and virtual environments. We need to do all we can to ensure that every child – regardless of circumstance – has equitable access to excellent STEM education.
Share your needs, issues & successes. Please respond to our Educator Survey!
Please feel free to share this survey with your friends and other teachers.
Thank you!
