Cays Park Master Plan Public Outreach: The restart of the project includes a robust public outreach campaign -- Restart, Review, Engage and Approve -- which includes a combination of strategies and platforms with informational materials tied to upcoming public meetings and key project dates and deadlines. These efforts will ensure that the City is reaching the community with information about how to participate in the planning process. Regular updates will be included in the City Manager’s Weekly Update as well as on here, the City’s public engagement site. Residents can expect to see direct mailers, emails if they subscribe to stay updated, videos and other content on the City’s website, social media sites and Coronado TV. Stay tuned for public engagement events coming soon and sign up for updates at upper right.
Community READ 2022 Voting Begins
Voting is now taking place to select this year’s Coronado Community READ from among five final titles. Voting will run through Feb. 6 and the READ and its programs will take place during the month of April. Votes can be cast online at CommentCoronado.org or by paper ballot at the Coronado Public Library, Bay Books and Coronado Historical Association. Now in its sixth year, the Coronado Community READ is designed to unite the community through the shared reading of a single book. The program encourages discussion and participation in planned community-building events around the theme of the title, selected by you, the readers.
New Software to Streamline Agenda Management
The City is implementing a new software program called PrimeGov to automate agenda management and board, commission, and committee applications. Through automation, PrimeGov facilitates a much more streamlined process for easy review and management of staff reports and agendas by key staff members. It is more efficient, creates consistency across departments, and minimizes errors related to Brown Act posting requirements. For the public, the agenda will allow for active links for easier online viewing and navigation on desktops as well as mobile devices. The public may now easily click on specific staff reports and attachments rather than scrolling or using bookmarks. The public also may provide comments directly on each item that will be posted for public viewing. With PrimeGov, agendas and staff reports, from 2019 to date, will be available to search by keywords, which was not available previously. The City is implementing the new program to modernize work related to the business of the City Council and expects increased transparency, better access, and an improved experience for citizens with the new agenda management software. Look for changes in the coming weeks. Speaking of changes, agenda readers may have noticed a new layout of staff reports. This change makes agendas easier to read and understand and gets straight to the issue.
Increase in COVID Cases Prompts Postponements, Cancellations
From travel talks to Library crafts to local live theatre, events in Coronado are being postponed or canceled as COVID-19 cases continue to rise. Due to the current surge of the omicron variant, the City is calling off programs that have high participation numbers or have the chance to draw large gatherings. Programs that have been postponed or canceled include the just-announced Spreckels Center Newcomer Tour, which has been rescheduled to Feb. 24. Other Spreckels Center events are being canceled altogether for January, including Armchair Travel and all bingo, chorus and current events programs. Some events will go on virtually and the facility itself remains open. At the Library for the next few weeks, regular programs such as storytime, crafts, and book clubs will be online only and can be viewed at their regular times on the Library’s Facebook page. While a few special events will still be taking place in-person, some Library speakers and concerts have been postponed. Sign up for Spreckels Center newsletters and visit the Library’s calendar below for the latest information. At least one local theatre, Lamb’s Players Theatre, announced that its 2022 season has been postponed until April. A statewide mandate requiring masks indoors in all public places regardless of vaccine status remains in effect through Feb. 15. The City requires masks at City facilities and is capping capacity at 50% for public meetings for social distancing purposes. Zoom public comments are available, however, 24-hours advance notice is requested.

Street Preventive Maintenance Work to Begin in Late January
The City is preparing to begin its annual slurry sealing of certain streets in town. The City applies slurry seal to extend the life of its streets. Each street gets a slurry seal every seven years. Minor work such as crack-filling, striping removal, and dig-out repair operations may be observed late January before work begins along those streets receiving the pavement work this year. Slurry operations will tentatively start the first week of February with the goal of completing the work before Presidents Day, Feb. 21. The City also will restore striping and complete several priority improvement projects recommended by the City’s Active Transportation Plan. Exhibits illustrating the proposed improvements can be viewed by clicking the Public Projects link below. Slurry seal is composed of asphalt emulsion, fine aggregates, mineral filler, various additives, and water, all of which are mixed and applied from a truck. It is a cost-effective and proven way to extend the life of roads. Streets and parking lots to receive slurry seal:

  • Orange Avenue from First to Second streets

  • Fifth Street from Alameda to Glorietta boulevards

  • Tenth Street from Alameda Boulevard to Orange Avenue

  • Olive Avenue from D Avenue to Alameda Boulevard

  • Alameda Boulevard from First Street to Olive Avenue

  • J Avenue from First to Tenth streets

  • I Avenue from First to Tenth streets
