SABRE SPOTLIGHT
COACH SEAN NICHOLSON
13U CSDHL

Coach Sean Nicholson is our Sabre coach in the spotlight this month.  Hockey is a sport that is celebrated for its competitive spirit. Coach Sean is a  great example of that spirit by expecting a consistent work ethic and positive attitude from his players. Sean's favorite food is Sushi. His favorite place to vacation is Eagle River, Wisconsin. Favorite song is "My Way" by  Frank Sinatra. Some unstructured fun on the ice in a backyard rink is how hockey caught Sean's attention. His top goal for this season is to stay healthy and enjoy the little moments of just playing hockey. Having fun and competing while teaching his team how to be good people and hockey  players both on and off the ice is an important part of a successful season.

COACHES CORNER

Coaches Corner: "What Really Matters in Life"

Recently, I was at a seminar and I was introduced to the following German TV commercial. I wanted to share this commercial with our club for much of the same reasons why it was shared at our seminar. I don't want to say too much about the commercial as it is best viewed on its own. But the message is warm felt and encouraging.

In our current state, it seems like even the simplest of tasks and activities involve huge challenges and hurdles. But in the end, the focus and purpose is the same. Embrace the challenge and rejoice in the reward of what really matters in life.

The slogan at the end of the commercial is part of their campaign slogan, which loosely translates to, "So that they can take care of what really matters in life."

COACH PETRAK'S GOALIE TIPS

Tip #34 Importance to Strive for Excellence and Not Perfection

Hello Goalies!

I couldn't be more happy for the season to continue! Now that we are getting back on the ice you might notice something's are going to be off in your performance. Rebounds going off your blocker right back into the slot, pucks popping out of gloves, feet not setting for shots, missing our post on RVH slides. Understand and be mature about the fact that you have not been on the ice, things take time to get back in order. As much as we try to achieve perfection, it is something that is unobtainable. No matter how much you work towards being perfect in every area. Striving for perfection is going to only set you back with frustration. No goalie is perfect. Tell me one goalie who has never been scored on? Still waiting.... Exactly! Maybe for a hand full of games in a season, if that, are goalies able to be perfect and stop every shot in one game maybe two in a row if you're really dialed in.

It is important to understand the fact that you need to be on the ice consistently in order to get back where you left off before break. It is better to strive for excellence and remember that it takes good quality reps to set your feet back under you during practice. It takes reps to get your blocker feeling good. It takes reps to feel your posts and know your angle. It takes time to become the goalie you want to be. In those moments that you do not achieve, remember that it is part of the game as well. Learning to deal with adversity and knowing how to stay level headed after a rough game take time to develop and it starts with your mindset. Stay focused on achieving excellence and not so much trying to be perfect, because as much as we want to achieve perfection, we are human and mistakes are part of our development to excellence.
