7th Grade Protest Projects
This spring, 7th Grade Language & Literature and Individuals & Societies collaborated in their unit "Protest: Then and Today." Students learned the history of protest, how it has changed over the years, and the characteristics of effective protest, culminating in a protest of their own. Some students decided to send letters, while others created art, music, and poetry. Some students hung their protests in the halls of our school, others posted their protests on social media, and still others decided to use the Oriole Times as their distribution platform.

Click here to view a collection of protest videos, poetry, art, and music from 7th grade students at St. Louis Park Middle School.
6th Grade Individuals and Societies
6th grade Individuals and Societies students completed an escape room this week where they had to "think like a historian" in order to escape. They practiced identifying primary and secondary sources, looking at multiple perspectives, and understanding cause and effect of historical events.
Letter from Keystone Student, 8th grader Aliya Osman
Keystone is an elective class where students explore race, culture and identity. Students use critical thinking and communication to take action to spark change. The following letter is from one of these students.

Evelyn Lashley
Keystone Teacher

Letter from Keystone Student, 8th grader Aliya Osman:
Recently in our Keystone class, we chose topics we want to raise awareness about and then proceed to take action on. For my Keystone Action, I chose to raise awareness about Islamophobia and the action I took was to share information with you through this letter.
When people make stereotypes they start to make their own beliefs about that person or group. People make rash decisions about others based on assumptions rather than looking at them as individuals. Stereotyping is almost always negative and harmful because it makes unfounded generalizations and disregards the humanity of those stereotyped.
Islamophobia is exaggerated fear, hate, and hostility toward Islam and Muslims, fueled by negative stereotypes, which leads to racism, discrimination, and the exclusion or ostracism of Muslims from social, political, and civic life (“Islamophobia”). Ideological networks, media voices, social and political organizations sometimes lead to the spread of Islamophobia.
Muslims and those who are perceived to be Muslims are both affected by Islamophobia. It has a disproportionate effect on those who are easily recognizable as Muslims, such as women wearing scarves, and those who are often mistaken for Muslims, such as men wearing turbans.
Islamophobia is real, normalised in many sections of our society and appears to be on the rise in all its forms. I wanted to raise awareness about this because, as a Muslim American, I believe it is important to demonstrate that this is an issue in our communities that we must solve.

Looking for Host Families for Global Interns
The middle school is excited to be bringing back Global Interns for the 2021-22 school year!   Global Interns are a great addition to our classrooms and make connections with many of our students, not only PSI students. Global Interns bring an exciting energy to the classroom and are eager to be involved in the SLP community. We are looking forward to hosting two more interns at the middle school. One is Angela from Spain and we are currently interviewing candidates to fill the other intern position.  We are looking for two host families for the fall semester-late August through the end of January and two more host families for next spring- late January through the end of the school year in 2022.  The main requirement is the intern must have their own legal bedroom. It is a great opportunity for your family to learn about another culture while introducing the Global Intern to Minnesota and our community in St Louis Park. You do not need to be a PSI family. All middle school families are welcome to host. There is no requirement for families to know Spanish as the interns are also fluent in English. We are currently in a global pandemic and the interns will often be coming from countries with more restrictions than the United States.  Information is fluid and the governments of the countries represented as well as the program that facilitates the Global Interns are dedicated to making the experience safe. My family has hosted an intern the last two years and had great experiences with lasting friendships.  Please reach out to me if you are interested or have questions. Karita Bentley at [email protected]
Freshman Orientation - Class of 2025

More information regarding both these events will be in the back to school mailing in early August.

*Please note - the first day of school for the 2021-22 school year is Wednesday, September 8.
