DIRECTOR'S CUP
Cheery Friday Greetings,
Our Plan of Service was approved by the State Library this past week. The Plan takes effect on July 1 and carries us through June 30, 2026. Thank you to the Board, Staff, Design Team, Advisory Committee members who worked so tirelessly on it--and to all members who helped us through commenting on the document, attending regional conversations, or completing the survey. Here is a link to the online version. Our next steps are to produce a version that is easier to read and use, and to create a work plan for 2021-2022 based on the new Plan’s goals.
While developing the Plan of Service, we re-articulated our mission, vision, values, and strategic directions. It is not that our mission has changed in any core way or that suddenly we have different values; rather, we have clarified what we mean and are expressing them more inclusively. Words matter. Advocacy, collaboration, and networking matter. Diversity, inclusion, justice, and equity matter. Innovation and learning matter. It is important that these crucial elements be articulated best as we can.
In that it is challenging to read the online version and it will be a few months until we can produce the other version, I’ve pulled them out for you, as follows.
Our new mission statement: SCRLC empowers our members through advocacy, networking, resources, and professional development; and by supporting diversity, innovation, and collaboration to strengthen their ability to serve their communities and promote environmentally sustainable practices.
Our new vision statement: SCRLC envisions a future where all people who live, work, and study in our communities have equitable and reliable access to information and sustainable resources
available anywhere, anytime, and are competent in all literacies. To achieve this vision, our member organizations include and welcome all people, and are valued and well-funded community partners, central to those they serve. In this envisioned future, environmental sustainability is central to our mission and practices.
Our values:

Advocacy that increases members’ visibility and their role and importance in society.

Collaboration and networking that supports and advances the ability of SCRLC members to meet their users’ needs, and that engages all members in SCRLC leadership, collaborations, programs, services, and beyond.

Diversity, inclusion, and justice, which recognizes that these are essential for equity for historically oppressed and marginalized groups of people, and that values anti-racist work and social movements that support equity for all.

Changing Environment of Resource Sharing in Academic Libraries

The Future of Resource Sharing: Technologies on the Horizon

A free instructional design training program available through WebJunction to enable library workers to transfer their in-person teaching skills to the online environment. 7 modules include: Orientation, Foundation, Diversity, Community, Content Creation, Course Management, & Capstone.
D4L was developed in partnership among the South Central Regional Library Council, Syracuse University's School of Information Studies, and the Empire State Library Network. It was funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

1941 Milk Strike in Delaware County
Incident near Fraser, NY. An image from the 1941 Milk Strike. Forty cans of milk being taken to Fraser outside of Delhi by Aaron Burman are being dumped. Burman had successfully evaded the pickets two days before with the help of state troopers but was unsuccessful this time. Pickets had put rocks in the road.

New Collection on NYHeritage
The Howland Stone Store Museum
Wells College's Archivist, Tiffany Raymond, used SCRLC RBDB grant money to digitize hundreds of fantastic materials at the Howland Stone Store Museum in Aurora. The Howland family of Sherwood, N.Y. included notable suffragists Emily Howland (1827-1929) and Isabel Howland (1859-1942). SCRLC's Claire Lovell and HSSM volunteers Marilyn Post and Ann Mathieson assisted Tiffany to scan and photograph large women's suffrage posters and much more. These materials have local and national historical significance, so take a look!
