Broomfield Reports First COVID-19 Related Outbreak at a Long Term Care Facility. Read the press release

Broomfield Public Health and Environment (BPHE) is reporting the first local outbreak at a long-term care facility related to the COVID-19 coronavirus in the City and County of Broomfield. An outbreak is defined as two or more cases within 14 days. The facility is Sunrise at FlatIrons.

At this time, there are 6 confirmed cases and one death associated with the outbreak at the facility. The resident who died was in his 90’s and known to have underlying health conditions.

“This facility continues to offer its residents an intense level of compassion and care, and we look forward to supporting the facility in implementing their isolation and quarantine practices,” said Public Health Director Jason Vahling. “With almost 40% of Colorado’s fatalities associated with long-term care facilities - home to our most vulnerable residents - we strive to create the safest environment possible.”

BPHE and Sunrise Assisted Living are working diligently to ensure all patients are receiving the proper care while limiting the further spread of the disease. Proactive efforts are focused on identifying, isolating and testing all of those who may be at risk because of these new cases, as well as helping to ensure that adequate supplies of personal protective equipment are in place for staff and residents.

Broomfield officials continue to urge residents to assume the coronavirus is widespread in the community and stay diligent about the stay at home order, social distancing requirements, wearing a mask while engaging in essential activities and frequent handwashing.

Self-isolate if you have COVID-19 type symptoms (fever, cough, and shortness of breath.) To flatten the curve, and impact on the healthcare system, go to the hospital only if you need urgent/emergent care (for instance, if you experience severe respiratory issues or difficulty breathing.) View information on isolation and quarantine .

The people who are more likely to get very sick from COVID-19 are:
  • Older people (over age 60), especially those over 80 years.
  • People who have chronic medical conditions like heart, lung, or kidney disease, or diabetes.
  • Older people with chronic medical conditions are at greatest risk.
Proactive Testing drop off
  • PLEASE NOTE: The State of Colorado is helping with COVID-19 proactive testing at long-term care facilities (LTCF), including Broomfield Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on April 23. The Unified Command Center (UCC) initiated proactive testing at LTCF on April 19. COVID-19 testing is supported by members of the Colorado National Guard, Colorado State Patrol and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment at three LTCF along the front range this week. With approximately 40 percent of Colorado’s COVID-19 fatalities associated with LTCF the state strategy is to test at locations based on the size of the facility (number of staff and residents) and not previously reported outbreaks. The goal is earlier identification of COVID-19 cases to try to limit spread in the facilities. The three facilities to be tested this week are located in El Paso, Adams and Broomfield Counties. Three hundred tests will be provided for each facility to test staff and residents. BPHE staff have been in contact with Broomfield Skilled Nursing and they look forward to participating in this proactive approach.
