Sunday on Cultural Connection on the Air is taking a break this week.
Listen to Cultural Connection on the Air Sundays at 8 a.m. on WAXE 1370 AM and 107.9 FM and on iHeartRadio.com. Replays are now online on the Cultural Council's website.
We're still looking for the currently cat-less person out there who can offer our late artist friend Arlia Almond's Kino a loving, one-cat home. All he needs is an empty lap and an indoor spot to curl up for a day of napping and nature gazing. He has several years of experience living with an artist, reader, and fellow napper, and will bring his own toys and dishes. Email Julie Lounibos if you have any leads. JulieLounibos@gmail.com

Dezmond Rogers at First Pres

Dezmond Rogers, IRCHS Alumni and graduate of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, will present a Double Bass recital on Sunday, May 30, 2021 at 3:00pm. The concert, featuring accompaniment by Dr. Jacob Craig, will take place in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Boulevard in Vero Beach. Admission is free; a $10 donation is suggested.
Dezmond Rogers has been a musician for as long as he can remember, and he fell in love with the Double Bass when he was twelve. He spent his time playing music with his family and multiple contemporary bands at Indian River Charter High School under the instruction of Lenore Peloso, David Mundy, David Heroux, and Dr. Ray Adams. In addition to the staff of Indian River Charter High School, Dezmond attributes much of his love and skill in music to his mother, Joy Keplar. A self-taught classical bassist, he made his way up to becoming a member of the Florida All-State Orchestra for several years. He then met Dr. Brian Powell in early 2016, who took Rogers under his wing to help him prepare for college auditions. He won a scholarship from the Vero Beach Choral Society, and received a full scholarship to the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.
Rogers has attended festivals throughout Florida and, in 2019, he toured with the Cuban American Youth Orchestra. In addition to classical Double Bass, Dezmond loves and plays all types of music and has a fascination with instrument repair and building. He is also a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia – the world’s oldest and largest secret national fraternal society in music- and has spent time as music director of the Beta Tau Chapter at UM.
Old Car News!
Earlier this month, Edison and Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers received a donated antique Calliope vehicle. The 1914 Model T is installed with a working pipe organ. Upon arriving, the organ will be played outside prior to moving the vehicle to its reserved spot inside the museum.

Donated by Michelle and Dale Day of Fort Myers, the car has previously been on display during the Estates' antique Ford car shows. The Day family has also donated a 1923 Model T to the Estates.

The Calliope was originally designed for use in a circus and was called a "circus truck." Many were steam powered and used to bring up the rear of the circus parade. These vehicles were generally homemade or converted and it is unknown how many were made; however, there are currently about 2,000 calliopes in existence.

With the addition of the Calliope, the site will have 10 antique cars. General admission includes the museum, where visitors can see five other vehicles: a 1937 Ford Coupe, 1914 Model T, 1907 Model G Cadillac, 1918 Chuckwagon, and a 1916 Model T that belonged to Thomas Edison. Across the street, there are four other vehicles on the Ford property: a 1923 Model T, 1929 Model A, 1917 Model TT, and a 1921 Square Cab.

Visitors can learn more about antique cars during the specialty Automotive Tour, offered on Monday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Led by Automotive Curator, James Moss, the tour covers the different types of Ford models on site, how the cars were produced and how to operate and start a vehicle. Tickets for Automotive Tours are $40 for non-members or $15 for Edison Ford members. For more information, visit EdisonFord.org.

The Dauer Museum of Classic Cars is located at 10801 NW 50th St., Sunrise. Doors open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nights and weekends are by appointment. Call 954-739-0978. Admission is $12.50. Military and first responders are free
Cars at the Elliott - Rachelle "Rocky" Grady

Each year, the Council on Aging of Martin County at the Kane Center presents the SAGE Awards to recognize the many contributions of seniors on the Treasure Coast. For the 2020 awards, the Elliott Museum nominated Rachelle "Rocky" Grady for the Art & Culture Award. Rocky is a 90 pound (+ or -) dynamo who has been a driving force in promoting the Elliott Museum’s car collection, and is a current member on the museum’s Board of Directors. The Council on Aging will be recognizing her on May 19.

Rocky first fell in love with the old garage in the original Elliott Museum, and was eager to take on a variety of projects. When the original Elliott Museum was demolished to make way for the new structure, Rocky was determined to keep the annual car show going. So, in 2011 and 2012, Rocky stepped up, and the car show took place at Witham Field. The new Museum opened in March 2013 and she renamed the event “Classics at the Beach,” which has been the museum’s most significant annual fund-raiser.

Rocky also initiated “Octane & Opulence,” which has evolved into two very popular exhibits. She also is the car gal you see at the Pine School’s “100 Years of Cars.” Rocky and her wonderful husband Henry are also Life Members of the Historical Society of Martin County, having reached and crossed that magical line of giving.
For those who like to work on their own classic car, truck or motorcycle, the Elliott Museum has opened up its garages to the local car community.

Come out and join us for some garage fun! Donations are gratefully accepted.

To make an appointment or for more information, contact Jim at 305-878-7795 or email him at jferrare@hsmc-fl.com.

Told entirely through song with the help of a main character Narrator, the musical follows preferred son Joseph. After being sold into slavery by his brothers, he ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the amorous advances of Potiphar’s wife. While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret dreams, and he soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled, Elvis-inspired, Pharaoh. Joseph’s solution to Egypt’s famine elevates him to Pharaoh’s right-hand man and reunites him with his family."
Performances are Thursday, June 3rd at 6:30pm; Friday, June 4th at 6:30pm; and Saturday, June 5th at 2pm & 6:30pm.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 772-231-6990 or online at www.RiversideTheatre.com.
Morse Museum Update
Opened this spring:

Chinese Blue and White Porcelain exhibits a fantastic array of porcelain objects collected over the course of forty years by lifelong Orlando residents Dr. Benjamin L. and Nancy Abberger and recently donated to the Morse Museum by the Abberger family. To see these objects arranged in the style of Jeannette McKean, the Morse Museum’s founder, really gives viewers a chance to better understand this art form and appreciate these pieces as artists like Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) and James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) did. The works in the vignette are all on view for the first time.
Also opened, Watercolors from Louis Comfort Tiffany’s “Little Arcadia”: An exhibit sure to perfectly blend new acquisitions and long-standing, beloved pieces the McKeans collected with the behind the scenes and the undeniably appreciated, as well as—if that wasn’t enough—the influence of the women and their creative force in Tiffany’s studios, something that Louis C. Tiffany deeply encouraged.
