A cloth mask covering the chin, mouth, and nose of each person using the library is strongly encouraged. Keep the mask on the entire time you are inside the building and please don't take your mask off or pull it down to speak. Remember that we are asking patrons to limit their time inside the building to an hour or less. This keeps everyone safe and allows for maintaining building capacity limits. Be aware that if the building or a section of the building reaches capacity, you may be asked to wait outside before entering. Food and drink are not allowed due to the mask recommendation. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Curbside Pick-Up Service Continues
|
Curbside pickup hours continue with new days and times. They take place on Tuesdays 10am-noon and 4-6pm. Also, on Saturday mornings 10am-noon. Curbside delivery allows safer pickup of library materials for anyone who isn't comfortable coming into the library. Holds must be placed no later than by 1pm the day before the next scheduled pickup. Items will be checked out and placed outside for pickup during the time you reserved. If you can't make your scheduled pickup, please call us and let us know if you want to come inside to pick it up or have us put it out for the next scheduled pickup. Call us or see the website for current available times and to schedule a pickup.

Now that the weather is turning colder, we have moved the DVDs that were temporarily located on the top floor to free up space in the Lecture Hall for programs, back down to the main floor. We couldn't put everything back in the exact same space because of social distancing measures, so some DVDs have gone into storage in the basement, the TV series and new DVDs are now located near the magazines. It's a treasure hunt!

Virtual programming continues, with some socially distant outside programming thrown in.

Join us on Tuesday, November 17 at 6:30pm for a virtual program with local author John Christie, about his upbringing in Dover. John's book is also about his Armenian heritage. Registration is required through the event calendar. A copy of the his book is in the library's collection.

Join volunteer Shane Morin help our community learn about great poets beyond the European and American classics we all read in high school. The first meeting on Tuesday, November 3rd at 3pm will feature works of Native American poets with journeys to Asia, Africa, South America, and more coming in future weeks. Meetings will be held every other Tuesday afternoon. Registration is recommended so we can email poems to people ahead of the next meeting.

Register to attend the live virtual Mindfulness program on Thursday, November 19th at 6:30pm. The program consists of an introduction and some education about mindfulness, a 20-minute guided meditation, and Q&A session to round out the hour. Give yourself a gift by attending this program and learning more about self-care during these difficult times.

Teens are invited to join us at 2pm in the Lecture Hall on Saturday, November 14th for an afternoon of bookend painting! We will be using these bookends to brighten up our Teen Loft. Please register for this event.

Adult & Teen Take & Makes
|
The Library is providing kits for teens and adults with a simple craft inside. Each kit includes everything you'll need to produce the craft. The adult kits are available at the Adult Circulation Desk and the teen kits are available in the Teen Loft. One per person while supplies last! Teens in grades 7-12 are welcome to bring home a Take & Make Kit filled with supplies needed to make a beaded lizard keychain beginning November 2. Be sure to check our event calendar for upcoming Take & Makes.

Teen Book Bingo Fall Challenge
|
Teens in grades 7-12 are invited to try out our Fall Book Bingo Challenge! Bingo cards will be available in the Teen Loft and at the Circulation Desk. Challenge runs from September 22 to November 30.The more you read, the more chances to get a bingo!
Bingo rules: Choose a book to read that fits the theme of an open bingo square (must be a different book for each square). Keep track of the books that you've read on a separate piece of paper. Cross off five squares in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) to get a bingo. Each bingo earns a raffle entry, and a full sheet gets an extra five raffle entries (in addition to those earned for bingos)! Bring your completed bingo card and your book list to the Reference Desk or send a picture to [email protected] by November 30 to be entered into the raffle for a gift card prize!

The Morning Book Group will discuss the book Salt Houses by Hala Alyan on Thursday, November 5 at 10am.
"Matter of Fact", a new non-fiction book group, will meet on Friday, November 13 at 10am on the lawn to discuss I Contain Multitudes by Ed Yong.
Pizza and Pages will meet in the Library Lecture Hall on Wednesday, November 18 at 6pm. We encourage kids in grades 7 and up to attend. The next book will be The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan and copies of the book are available for borrowing online through NH Overdrive and Hoopla Digital.
The Afternoon/Evening Book Group will be discussing The Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkel at 3pm and 6:30pm on Monday, November 16th.
Get Lit will meet in the Lecture Hall on Wednesday, November 4 at 6:30pm to discuss the book The Stranger Diaries by Elly Griffith. Copies of the book are available on Hoopla Digital, NH Overdrive, and on the library's Kindles.

Join us for a virtual exploration of The Harvest Baker by Ken Haedrich. Throughout the month of November, send in pictures of your dishes created with recipes from the books and a small description of your cooking process, how you felt about the recipe, and/or your thoughts on the book. We will share your creations on our social media pages throughout the month. Photos can be sent to Emily at [email protected], or tag us on Instagram @doverpubliclibrary. A copy of the book will be available at the main circulation desk to photocopy recipes, and it is also available to borrow on Hoopla Digital.

Every November hundreds of thousands of people participate in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), where they take on the challenge of writing 50,000 words in one month! This year, DPL will be running events all month-long to help motivate and support our writers.This challenge is open to all ages; our children's department will be running programs through NaNoWriMo's Young Writers Program, where kids can set a word count goal that is right for them. Everyone has a story to tell, so join the challenge and bring it to life! For questions, e-mail [email protected].

The Friends have some new merchandise for sale. Now available are mini bottles of hand sanitizer perfect for a purse, the car or even a Christmas stocking! A 2oz. bottle is $3.50. Coming soon are face masks for adults and children. Still available are the popular tote bags for only $15 and notecards featuring the library for $7 per box. Be sure to check out the expanded ongoing book sale in the library. New items are added weekly. Cash or check only.
