The Holy Gospel | Matthew 5:1-12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

-"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
-Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
-Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
-Blessed are those who hunger thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
-Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
-Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
-Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
-Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
-Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

The Feast of All Saints

On November 1 of each year, the church celebrates the feast of All Saints, commemorating the heroic witness of the Saints in every age. This year, we have the additional pleasure of welcoming a new member to the Body of Christ in the Sacrament of Holy Baptism and receiving his parents into the congregation. I invite as many as are able to join us in person and online for this festive occasion.

For a look at why we celebrate All Saints in the first place, let me commend this article by Fr. Stewart Clem at this link

May the ever-blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints
pray for us, now and always. Amen.

The Commemoration of All Faithful Departed: All Souls’ Day

Following our observance of All Saints, we pause to remember the faithful departed and to bear witness to their life of faith and entry into the church expectant. It has been my custom to observe the occasion with a Requiem Eucharist, which will be held Monday, November 2, at 7 p.m.

In that service, we recall both collectively and by name, those who have died in the hope of the Resurrection. If you have not yet included a loved one on our Requiem Necrology, sheets are available in the narthex of the church and will be out until just before the service. You may also send names to Fr. Ben for inclusion (rector@standrews-edwardsville.com) or signup at this link below:

I encourage attendance at this annual Requiem Eucharist because many find it to be a particularly moving commemoration. I would suggest that sentiment may resonate even more this year when so many have been unable to attend to the bedsides and gravesides of friends and family due to this present pandemic. In our Requiem, we will gather to remember them and, in our remembering, give the glory to God.

May the souls of the faithful departed
through the mercy of God rest in peace,
and may light perpetual shine upon them. Amen
Stewardship 2021

Thank you for your gifts to St. Andrew’s in 2020. Supported by many hours of volunteer service and generous financial gifts, St. Andrew’s has carried forward the mission of worshipping God and serving our neighbor in difficult times.

October is Stewardship month, a time when all of us reflect on the past year and make a pledge to the church for 2021.

We hope you enjoyed the two video messages sent to you in the past two weeks. The last of three stewardship messages will come to your inbox in the next few days. You should also have received your stewardship letter and pledge form via email last weekend. You are requested to submit your pledge form online or via mail prior to November 8, when the pledges will be blessed at the altar. We hope you will continue to support the good works of our parish!

Leaders to join Presiding Bishop Michael Curry for Holding on to Hope:
A National Service for
Healing and Wholeness

[The Episcopal Church] On the eve of a historic election and in the midst of pandemic and racial reckoning, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will call Americans together for a live-streamed prayer service from Washington National Cathedral. The Holding on to Hope service will be held on All Saints Sunday, November 1, at 4:00-5:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, and viewers can join in a variety of ways.

Using a combination of live and pre-recorded elements gathered from across the nation, the service will feature an ecumenical and multifaith array of voices, musical offerings, and prayers designed to help the nation to confess, grieve, and hope as one. In addition to Bishop Curry’s sermon, the service will also include reflections from Father James Martin, a noted Roman Catholic author and commentator on American life and values; and Valarie Kaur, an inspiring Sikh filmmaker, author, and civil rights attorney.

“We hope people everywhere will light a candle and join us in prayer at this urgent moment in our national life,” Bishop Curry said. “As people of faith, we believe in the power of prayer and the power of God’s love to heal a nation and change this world.” Click here for more information.

During the November Book Sale Fredna Scroggins will be posted at the back door of Pearson Hall (next to the soda machine!) with scrip cards for sale on Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m. She will have a supply of the cards most frequently purchased such as Kohl's, Target, Panera, and Starbucks, as well as Dierbergs.

Anyone who wants a specific card that we do not as a rule carry, should contact JoAnn Nabe (see directory for e-mail or phone) by the evening of Sunday, November 1. She will place an order the first thing on Monday if your card is available.

Keeping the Spirit of the Angel Tree

With the uncertainty of the pandemic, the Outreach Committee has decided to make our Christmas giving as contact free as possible. We will be foregoing our usual Angel Tree and will be giving gift cards.

We realize there will be more need so we are asking for those who can to give generously. Please make your checks to St. Andrew’s. Alternatively, you may contribute online by clicking here. Be sure to indicate that you are giving to Outreach on your check or online.
