Try Something New in November
Even though it feels like we have been trying something new since March, November could be a great time to change up the routine of our new normal. Trying out new things can actually boost our well-being. When we open up to new ideas, it helps us stay curious and engaged. It can also bring a sense of accomplishment and help to boost our self-confidence and resilience.

Employee Wellness Survey Results
|
|
Thank you! We had TREMENDOUS response with valuable feedback!
Many of you are seeing our efforts! This newsletter, HVAC, new facilities, district SWAG, the flexibility to work from home, and strong school cultures were among the positives of working in SLUSD.
With that being said, as a district team, we have identified three next steps:
- Strong intentional collaboration with our site administrators to increase efforts towards wellness at all of our sites.
-
Improved communication about the health and wellness work happening in SLUSD. Check out a first step with our streamlined employee wellness and safety area on our website on the employee portal.
- A top priority of staff health and wellness as we plan to reopen our schools.
This turnout may have had something to do with our friendly competition for completion bragging rights, which ended in a THREE-WAY TIE!
JEFFERSON, MCKINLEY, AND THE ADULT SCHOOL!!
Each had 99% completion, missing only one one staffer. Incredible!
SLTA nabbed the bargaining unit bragging rights, with 64% of their members returning the survey. Thank YOU!
Our three $100 Visa gift card raffle winners are:
- Joya Brandon, San Leandro High School, SLTA
- Norma Gutierrez, Roosevelt Elementary, CSEA
- Helder Rocha, John Muir Middle School, Teamster/Trades
Congratulations! Gift cards will be going out to those folks next week and thank you to everyone who took valuable time to help us improve.

American Fidelity Section 125 Benefits Online
|
|
Due to the changes brought on by COVID-19, we are making changes to this year’s American Fidelity Section 125 enrollment for Medical Flex Spending Accounts, pre-taxing medical and additional optional benefits.
American Fidelity is prepared to ensure that we will be able to continue to offer all our Section 125 deductions and other voluntary benefits while maintaining the safety of our employees. Employees must meet with American Fidelity to renew Flexible Spending and Dependent Day Care accounts. American Fidelity will be utilizing “virtual meeting” technology. This will allow each of you to get the same experience with an expert on compliance and benefits to allow you to make good choices for you and your family.
As a district, we are encouraging all benefited staff members to sign up for an online conference with an American Fidelity representative, to learn about and review the benefits options. Once you sign up for a time, you will receive an email with a link for the online meeting.
Enrollment meetings can be scheduled now and will take place between October 26 and November 6.
With the understanding that this is an unusual circumstance, we wanted to provide this opportunity to make it as convenient for you as possible:
- You do not need any special technology. Any computer can be used to enroll provided you have a good internet connection.
- You will be able to complete your enrollment from the comfort and safety of your home or office.
- You can bring in your spouse or other decision makers during the meeting, if you wish.
Below is a link to sign up for an appointment. If you need additional assistance scheduling your online benefits review, please call American Fidelity at 800-365-8306, Option 1.

Free Mental Health Counseling for ALL Employees
Did you know SLUSD offers free mental health counseling? The Claremont EAP provides you and your family members with confidential, in-person, short-term counseling services that are fully paid for by SLUSD.
When you call Claremont, you or your family member will speak with an experienced counselor who will ask for some identifying information as well as a general description of the situation or problem. It is important that you provide the counselor on the telephone with some detail regarding your concerns and preferences so that the counselor can refer you to a provider with the experience to best meet your needs.
You will receive the name and number of a licensed counselor. It is your responsibility to call the counselor and schedule your initial appointment. There is no paperwork, claim forms or fees. This is an easy, no-cost service to help address a range of personal and professional issues.
To access the counseling benefit or other EAP services, please contact Claremont at 800-834-3773 or click HERE.

It's Time to "Deskercize"
In our current world, we are likely spending more time sitting at a desk, behind a computer, than our bodies were designed to handle.

Staff Spotlights: Jefferson Elementary & Bancroft Middle School
You've already heard how those Jaguars can fill out surveys, but did you know that they also celebrate each other? Granted, those sweet treats may not be on the healthy foods list, but everyone deserves a splurge here and there - especially our staff right now! Nice work Principal Alcalá and VP Castillo!

Over at Bancroft, the Broncos have launched their annual 2-week Health, Wellness & Fitness Challenge. Their staff signs up to share their personal health improvement goals, then that same group keeps 'em motivated! There are fitness, hydration, sleep, and meditation targets which can make an enormous difference in just a short time, like 2 weeks! What a great way to stay connected and #SLUSDstrong while tapping into the power of collectivity.
And as coordinator Deanna Slaton says, "In the grand scheme of things, it's only two weeks!"
If you have wellness work happening at your site, let us know! Email communications@slusd.us and take your moment in the spotlight!

Upcoming community flu clinics:
- Oakland Coliseum, November 3
- Castro Valley Adult School, November 6
- McClymond's High School, November 14
- San Leandro Senior Center, November 16
Updated flu information can be found on the Public Health website along with the current list of county immunization clinics. Alameda County, the California State Department of Public Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone ages six months and older. Getting the flu vaccine reduces illness and transmission in our community, reduces clinic visits and hospitalization, and prevents illnesses that mimic COVID-19.
