Food history – and food programming on TV – has been whitewashed for centuries. This powerful series sets an example of how to start correcting the record. Click here for more.
Saturday, June 5, 9:00 AM Gardening by the Bucket
Goals:

This beginning gardening project and the program will show those, who have very little knowledge about and experience with growing their own healthy food, the basics on how to do so economically, using natural pesticides and fertilizers.

Gardening by the Bucket will show beginners how to grow food in portable buckets or other containers they have laying around (baskets, cans, etc.). These containers are portable and can be moved to various locations during the season to maximize sunlight and prolong plant growing seasons.

Garden Club members and those participating in the Gardening by the Bucket project are asked to come out on Saturday morning, June 5th, at 9:00 AM for their first hands-on interactive class about growing your own food. The class will be taught & lead by our own UE 150/BWFJ expert gardening enthusiast, Ciscero Warren! When we are finished, your portable “bucket garden” and the raised bed boxes will be planted and you’ll be on the road to providing healthy food for your family and yourself!

Supplies you should bring with you:

At least one 5-gallon bucket (food grade – not one that has had gasoline, solvents, or cleaning chemicals in them), plastic tubs, lined baskets, ceramic pots, etc. If you must buy one, try places like Dollar Tree or Home Depot. You may be able to get free buckets from bakeries or delis.

Gardening gloves (if you want to keep dirt in your nails and potential calluses to a minimum)

Any special seedlings that you definitely want to plant. Ciscero has started growing seedlings for us especially for these projects, but feel free to bring more or your own.

We’ll have additional supplies on site.

To help us plan for success, call (919) 876-7187 or email: ciscerot@bellsouth.net or nlmayo5@yahoo.com to let us know you are interested and will be present!

New bill proposes to limit teaching of historical
The NC Justice Center opposes HB324, which passed the House on May 12 and is headed to the Senate. The bill would stifle teachers’ ability to discuss the nation’s history of oppression and discrimination.
Reminder to register for the 2021 Online Great Labor Arts Exchange if you have not done so already.

Last year was so much fun and fostered even more strength in our solidarity, despite the fact that we could not be together in person. Thus, we’re going online again this year, using Zoom video conferencing and live streaming. You’ll be able to listen, sing-a-long and most importantly, share in the communal joy of being together during these difficult times.
This year we will have presentations and workshops by Linda Allen, David Bacon, Nadine Bloch, Al Bradbury, Savi Bruce, Makeba Dukes Gibbs, Huayra Forster, Chris Garlock, Ken Giles, Ben Grosscup, Dilson Hernandez, Gary Huck, Mike Konopacki, Karen Nussbaum, and Cecilia Prado, as well as panels on Choral Singing through the Pandemic, and Asian American and Pacific Islander Cultural Response to COVID and Rising Anti-Asian Racism.

The Guardian
At least 15 states are trying to ban schools from teaching critical race theory and the 1619 Project. The reactionary movement stretches back to the 1920s and the KKK. Click here for more.
