SITTING ON THE FENCE
A fence is usually put on property to either keep something in or something out. Oftentimes fences are used as boundaries where one knows not to “cross over.”
There is another kind of fence that divides loyalties. God speaks about this in Revelation to Laodicea where they were neither “hot nor cold.” He called them lukewarm. It would appear that they didn’t know which side of the fence that they were loyal to. They were sitting on the fence.
In Matthew 6:24 it says, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Mammon is wealth. Many people have their lives focused on getting more. They don’t want just what is on their side of the fence, they want what’s on the other side too.
You could look at it like this. One side of the fence is God’s side, and the other side is the world’s, or the devil’s side. By sitting on the fence, it means that you haven’t chosen which side you want to be on. You like being known as belonging to God, but you seek after things of the world. You are double minded. You are sitting on the fence.
In James 1:8 it says, “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” This is a man that is sitting on the fence. You could say he wants his cake and eats it too.
We must make a choice my friends. We can’t have it both ways. One way is God’s way, and the other isn’t. Making the right choice is for eternity. In Joshua 24:15b it says, “…choose you this day whom ye will serve….” If you are sitting on the fence, make a wise choice as to which side of the fence you belong on and get off the fence!
