Lance Reese, a sophomore mass communications major from Columbia, S.C., was selected from more than 100 applicants for inclusion in the MediaWise Voter Project. Reese, and 10 students from other diverse colleges and universities across America, will work to train their peers how to tell fact from fiction online in advance of the 2020 election.

The project, a nonprofit and nonpartisan program of The Poynter Institute, aims to teach digital literacy skills to first-time voters in the 2020 election. In a time when the spread of misinformation online is rampant, MediaWise and its partners aim to teach young people how to debunk misinformation online.

Claflin University Athletics Recognizes 117 Student-Athletes During National Student-Athlete Day

The Athletics Department virtually honored 117 student-athletes during National Student-Athlete Day on Monday, April 6. S tudent-athletes with a 3.0 grade point average or better were honored.

National Student-Athlete Day is a NCAA Initiative that recognizes the accomplishments of student-athletes nationwide who excel in the classroom, on the playing field and in their communities. National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations. NCAA involvement began in 1994.

"It is important to recognize the academic achievement as well as the athletic achievements," said Athletics Director Dr. Jerome Fitch.  "To have 72 percent (117 of 162 student-athletes) of the total number of student-athletes honored during this day was really a great achievement."
